2-1/2" x 3" DP Back Exhaust

Post by SMSP »

Had a customer here in Fredericksburg who contacted me about doing a custom 3" exhaust on his MX3. He has a turbo 1.8L from Japan (don't know the code, I'm still getting up to speed on these cars). In the future he wants to go with a custom Turbo manifold and a new turbo so I had to work with the stock DP which is about 60mm OD.

Here are a couple pictures of his stock set up.

So I cut the DP about mid oil pan and slip on some 2-1/2" stainless tubing that was then bumped to 3" OD. Into a flex joint and then some more 3" tubing into a hi flow metal substrate cat (I probably should have moved the cat back a little so the hangers were on the tubing, but this won't hurt anything how it is now).

Some more 3" tubing and then into the 3" stainless resonator

The custom tubing that went around the gas tank and over the axle was done (me unaware of) in aluminized steel versus stainless. The bends around the gas tank were perfect but the bend up to go over the axle and some of the bends in the over axle tubing, still need some tweaking.

Then we finished off with a Magnaflow 14835 muffler.

This system is much much larger than stock and it's tight going over the rear sub frame and with original rubber hangers that are very soft I couldn't get the hangers to keep the system high enough so it sometimes hits on the sub frame. So the owner will either get new stock rubber hangers or some aftermarket hard rubber hangers. This system has 6 hangers on it and it moves much more than the Honda and Acura systems that I build with only 5 hangers. So I think Mazda must be using softer rubber.

How much did you charge for that? I am wondering if I am getting ripped off...

I have noticed what you say about the rubber hangers being too soft... I got a cat back exhaust done, and noticed it seemed to move. Sometimes it's fine, but other times the hanger they put on my muffler will rattle against my rear passenger tow hook. When it rattles, the hanger is right up against it, and I cannot move it away to save my life. But then I will check it like a day later, and the hanger is back in it's normal spot (two inches or so away) and not rattling. I blame my exhaust shop for a crappy install (put a cat back where the resinator used to be) and I'm going to have it redone at another shop, when I have my custom intake made.

Does anyone know where to get some good aftermarket hangers? Or just a good set of hangers in general? I'm probably going to have them all replaced when this other shop does the new cat back, maybe just have them order some?
It might be slow, but it's not a civic!
