busted hose

can someone explain the purpose of that little coolant hose? It's about 3/4 inch diameter and about 7 inches long and connects next to the thermostat. Mine keeps getting little pinholes shooting fluid onto the engine...

I don't remember seeing that on my DOHC, you running a SOHC?
