Getting my ZE to pass emissions

Post by TsiMiata »

Well three tests later I finally got my ZE to pass massachusetts emissions. I failed the 1st time because I had a bad rotor. It was loose on the distributor shaft and chewed up the inside of my dist. cap. I failed for Nox, CO & HC. 2nd go round I passed HC & CO but failed Nox. Limit was 2.5 I got 3.47. So this last time I added a gallon of coleman camp stove fuel to ~1/3 tank of gas. My HC & CO dropped ~30% and my Nox went from 3.47 to 2.37.

In short add a gallon of Coleman Camp stove fuel to a 1/3 tank of gas and you will pass emissions.

Makes perfect sense. Gasoline is one of the worst burning fuels for emissions because the molecules are irregular. Pretty much any purer substance like propane or ethanol will burn cleaner because it's a more predictible conversion to pure CO2 and water, with less instance of harmful emissions.

That's useful to know, but do you know what's in Coleman's? Its not something one could get in UK by name.

It's Naptha with a bit of rust inhibitor in it. I think it also goes under the name of "white gas"

Well, I was wrong; you can buy it in UK - half a litre for £5; that's about $44 for that gallon

What octane gas did you have in the tank when you put the coleman fuel in? Did you get tested as a stock K8 or did you go under a "modified" (hotrod as we call is here in Ontario, CanadA) class?

Sorry for all the questions, it's just that I' wanna give this a try this or next week.

I was using 93 octane. We don't have a hot rod classification here, all cars get tested the same. It was tested as being a 1.8 liter.

BTW, TSIMiata...how long did you drive with the coleman fuel in your tank before you went for your test
