Plastic intake manifold

Post by cptnemo »

I test drove the mazda 3 and afterwards when I looked in the engine bay I realized the intake manifold was plastic! Does anyone know what type of plastic is used? Can I get a big tub and pour my own manifold?

are you sure it wasnt just an engine cover that took the shape of the manifold?

composite plastic intake manifolds have been around for years from various manufacturers... I know I've seen them on BMWs many times over.

Help prevent heat transfer, but crack easy in accidents.

If you wanted to spend big bucks, you could do a lot of fun things... from simple sheet metal to carbon fiber.

I dont think I'd actually want one, it was just really bizarre seeing it there. I wouldn't trust it in Canadian winters and I cant imagine it saves that much weight. It would make mass producing custom manis really easy though depending on the price of the plastic.
