Wheel Weight?

Post by mcgowan »

I will be putting on 17" rims in the spring and have been stressing about the weight of the rim, they look heavy, will this cause extra problems?

They will not cause any problems. However, they are typically heavier so it takes more power to turn them, therefore you're a little slower.
Typical 17" rims weigh around 20-25lbs.
But, if you get lightweights they can be around 15 lbs., which isn't heavier than stock (I think).

I thought mine were bad, but they are just over 16 lbs. Any lightweight ones I have seen are close to 10-14 lbs now.
You wont really see much performance drop with 17s. You'll lose acceleration, but gain a little top speed. Also, you will be going 1.8% faster than it says so on the speedometre.
~A

There is some chart on the Internet that has most rims listed, and most of them were about 22lbs. About a third were around 14lbs.
I know the Motegi MR7 are 24lbs and mine are 22lbs. The Konig Heliums are about 15lbs., I figure that's why they named them so. More and more rims are lightweight these days.
I looked around on Ebay awhile back, and they had most of the weights listed for their rims.

Certain Miata wheels, as well as the Millenia wheels were much lighter (11 lbs)

www.wheelspecs.com is a great source for wheel weights. rotas are a good bargain for weight vs. price. i believe they are all replicas and not as light as the originals but still quite light. group buy center is having a gb on rota wheels as well.
