Redoing the back seats/trunk

At first I was going to just put in my black back bench and call it a day, but my buddy really got me thinking what it would be like to do something different.



So here's the game plan. We are building a wooden frame, nailing down a plywood sheet with foam and some auto carpet (all shaped to the contours of the trunk, naturally).



The frame is basically built. Tomorrow should bring more progress with the padding and plywood.

Next weekend should bring foam padding and black carpeting. Also, we screwed in some one inch blocks on three sides of my subs (not shown) so that they wouldn't slide around like they were the night before. Tomorrow I'll take some less blurry shots to show off better detail. I'm extremely glad I'm going this route, definately makes my car better in my opinion.

It would have been much lighter to make the top out of fiberglass with smaller wooden supports. But, all the same it looks like it is turning out well. Good luck.

Here's where it will stay till next weekend. Somethings we still have to get done is straightening the edge of the wood nearest the seats, filling in the gaps on the edges and middle with foam, and finally covering it all with carpet.

I would have gone with fiberglass, but we aren't experienced with it and this was easier to do. At some point I'd love to. As for the amp, I have no complaints thus far in the year I've had it.

It's finally done.







So it's finally done, only after one week. Edges have been evened off and a lip added to help hold stuff in place. The subs have 1 inch blocks on three sides so that it stays in place as well.

Overall I'm pretty happy about it. There are more efficient ways to go about it, but with tools and materials on hand, we did a good job.

But now you can't recline your seat back all the way so that you can barely see the road and drive like most "cool" Civic drivers do.

Looks great. Suggestion - Consider removing the rear seat belts & hardware. They are heavy, like 5-6lbs all together, you don't need em, and removal will help toward countering the weight gained from the platform and sub setup. Every little bit of weight reduction helps, especially on the SOHC RS. Hmmm... easy for me to say, maybe I should put myself on a diet so me AND my car would be 20lbs lighter...

Man, if you went that far removing the rear seat, you do know, you now have like 20 cubic feet to work with for a big *** 18" ported sub, right?
