Get a rubber hose that is small in diameter than the shifter and then slip it on. Obviously it's going to be a REAL TIGHT fit, but it's worth it in the end...cause it won't compress after.

local auto parts store/ UAP NAPA, PARTS SOURSE, CAR QUEST, PEP BOYS, look in the yellow pages under automotive parts stores, you could try canadian tire dont know if they have it,
you probably need 1/2 inch or 5/16 inch rubber fuel hose.

Just out of curiosity, what brand of shift knob and boot did you get? As far as i know, the Pacesetter short shifter has the same threads as the stock shifter. My Sparco Globe-X came with little adapter thingamabob which screws into the shifter. The knob then screws into the adapter (even has an arrow so that the word Sparco is always the right way up).
As for your second question, the three MX-3 short shifters i would reccommend are the Pacesetter, the B&M, or the TVM (all available from Corksport). The Pacesetter uses a different size bushing, making it difficult to replace the bushing. TVM got good reviews for its WRX short shifter from Sport Compact Car, so there's no reason why the MX-3 short shifter shouldn't be of the same calibre. Then again, could just be a marketing business deal (ie., "This product rocks, now gimme my money").
I have the Pacesetter, but if i could do it all again, i would probably shell out and try the B&M. That way i could use all four of my Bronzeoil bushings and not get sketched out every time someone says "Pacesetter gear is known to rust".
Hope this helped.
:::::::::::::::::
Deuces,

if your gonna get a new aftermarket knob and boot you have to go wit the momo. you see i had the same prob the knobs would pop off or shake and move when i moved it but ever since i got a momo boot and know its just like the stock one...inside of the know is a rubber hose like they said that you pretty much jam onto the shaft and then slide the knob over it tighten the screws and it will never i mean never come loose unless you want it to oh and the brackets on the underside of the shift console has nubs on it and the momo boot has an elastic ring at the bottom that once you have it over one of those nubs it doesnt come off
hope this helps
Cody

that is a peaice of crap man seriously you need to go wit momo its expensive ($70 usd for the boot $95 usd for the knob) but you will never need another one it sounds like a total rip off but trust me its worth it plus usually the only stores you can buy em at will install em for ya and give u a warranty so you dont have to worry hope this helps ya....oh and i wouldnt go with the short shifter i guy i know did and it smoked his trans in no time i should know my dad stepdad uncle and grandfather all worked or work on trans for a livin i mean it is your car but the stock shifter still looks good with the right boot and knob and plus short shifters sometimes can actually stick and make shiftin slower than stock shifters.
good luck

Even though i'm a die-hard Sparco fan, i'm gonna have to agree with JWilly. Momo's shift knob system is failsafe and totally integral. That is, a MOMO boot will fit a MOMO knob perfectly. Friends of mine have never had any problems with their MOMO gear.
The problem i've been having with the Sparco and Pacesetter combination is that the Pacesetter vibrates so much that my shift knob actually rattles a little at high revs. Now that i know about the rubber ring thing, i'm wishing Sparco had done the same as MOMO.
Ractive has some nice looking knobs, and i've been tempted in the past, but I've never really trusted Ractive or any Toucan Industries products. I don't have a good reason for it, but i just never trusted them.
:::::::::::::
Deuces,

I have the pacesetter - ractive knob setup, and I have had no problems. Mine works great - no rattle or anything. There are some little adapter things that came with the knob -- I cut one of those up like a ring and the knob is on there tight.
