Dash board swap

Post by SuperDave »

Hey I guys, I did a search on this and really only came up with one result. My question being, will the 94+ Mx-3 dash's fit the pre. 94 models? The search results gave me a thread with this exact question, but no definet answers on it. Has any one tried it??
Im curious becaue im pondering on buying a 93 Mx-3 with sunroof and v6. I REALLY want this one because of the sunroof and v6 factor lol. But I must say I really like the 94+ interiors. So im waiting to find out if I can do a swap before I make a purchase.
Thank alot!

Well, YES, you can do it, but it's just not easy.
It's not hard either.
You need quite a few pieces from the 94+ models, but it's all just bolt-in and take out or whatever.
It's a good 2 days work.
Someone did a small write-up of a step-by-step process too.
~A

Well i was comparing pictures and from the appearance of it It looked like the stearing column was identical, but id rather be safe and get one. I assume from looking id need the whole dash, and the plastic that goes down from the dash, past the shifter all the way to the clenex box/arm resr in between the seats. any thing else?
Also where is the step-by step guide located? Id love to read it, it would be great help.

thanx

I'm in the process of doing that. I'm still trying to get the 94 main part of the dash out. From what I can see, you have to adapted the heater controls. On my 93, they both have cables moving them, but on the 94, it's electronic. Make sure to get all the wire adapters, might have to change them.

You don't have to change the heater controls? When I was looking at the 94, only one cable was coming down to move the vents. On my 93, two cables come down and are connected to two separate plastic swivels, the heater control, and head to defroster change. The 94 only had a head to defroster change. I may be wrong, but that's what it looked like. The steering column looked about the same. I'm still trying to get that dam thing out.

You may be right, so suffice to say it's safe to just go ahead and change them.
So, basically what you're saying it that the 94+ uses LESS cables???
~A

ok from what Ive found from doing a cpl (actually a bunch) or searches, is that u need this:
steering column (94+ is slightly larger and dif shaped at the top)
Dash (duhhh)
all clips and mounting brackets that go under neath the dash
air bags (i dont care if my air bags work or not, but u need them to fill in the gaps that would come witht the 94+ dash and steering column)
*if u want air bags 2 work, sensors, pumps etc need to added to the list
also something to do with automatic seatbelts or something I noticed Barry Clark mentioned in a post
and MAYBE heater cables and connectors. Most likely all the venting moulds and such as well.
also all the plastic attachmentd which connect to the dash that go around the shifter all the way to the glove box between the seats

thats what ive come to the conclusion of, any body else feel free to add

heads up on the heating/coooling air system. the 94+ had either slider control or electronic control. The slider control should work fine in a 93/92 with the 94 dash. However, if you go the electronic route, you need to replace the entire heating assembly(except the heating radiator) and the blower motor assembly. these two pieces contain the motor actuators for the electronic controls - you will also have to custom make the wire harness to link them to the control unit.
if you want non functioning airbag replacements :

So, infact the 94 had both cable and electronic heater controls, excellent. I'll definetly go that route. As for the air bag. I'm planning on putting in a moniter inplace of the airbag, and put some hinges on the air bag cover, so it can flip out. Anymore info would be appreciated.
