PROBLEM RUST SPOTS??

Post by gleichnerr »

Are MX-3s "Super Rust-Resistant", or is it just my imagination.
From what I can see from outside the vehicle, and from underneath, there is hardly any rust on this car. I drive this little bugger all year round, and in the Milwaukee area - they usually do not believe in Snow-Plows; instead, they keep throwing salt on it until it melts down the drain.
Q1. Anyway, if I want to be sure that the unibody is structurally sound, are there any "hidden trouble spots" that I should be looking at (remove particular panels, etc.)
Q2. Also, are there any spots where cracking frequently develops? (I know that on some older Subaru's the strut towers were notorious for rusting loose.)

I noticed that my 93 car is also very clean, and im in the cold damp UK weather.
but the car is imported so i dont know its history.
I have noticed that dirt and cack builds up in the front wing and you can see in there with the doors open, just keep it cleaned out, as well as the rear arch lip. check all drain holes along the sill and keep them unblocked. that takes care of the bodywork bits really.

My cars body has almost 200,000 miles on it and not one rust spot...I've never really seen a rusted MX-3, this topic just made me realize that. God bless Mazda! :)

I have rust on mine. Mostly it's just the bottom of the doors (a little), and the top of the sunroof in a corner...things like that. I got my mx-3 from a guy in quebec, so thats why there is rust, but still, no they aren't super rust proof. They're just like any other car really.
