268 whp 8 psi non intercooled KLDE

Post by rebel2k4 »

So I just got back from the dyno with my mx3. About time, Ive had this thing boosted for 10k miles now. First pull was at 5 psi. turned out 223 whp. I guessed 215 right before. Geez im good :)

2nd pull I threw on the boost controller. 268.95 whp at 8 psi totally untuned.

Unfortunately my spark plug wires were arking so bad they couldnt even get an rpm reading off it. So it said peak tq was 800 ft lbs lol.

Heres what its got:

Stock grand national turbo, kit built by yours truely
93 140k mile PGT KL03
3 cold start injectors
Stock intake mani/tb with tons of carbon build up and VRIS tied open
8:1 FMU
2.5" crush bent exhaust with thrush turbo chamber muffler
Non intercooled.
stock ecu and injectors

I think thats it....

So we're done with round one. Look out for next spring....

And screw you guys who talked trash about my kit being non intercooled!!! Im also 5300 ft above sea level!

Man you and your complaints about elevation... Nice numbers though. Any detonation? Do you have a wideband O2? If so what is that reading at peak boost?

Hey man, would this setup work on a K8 engine aswell? (8 psi would maybe be a bit high on stock internals though).

How much am I looking at in parts on a project like this? (excluding headers and custom exhaust work).

I have a question, in your sig you say you have a walbro 190 pump. I thought it was like a 225? Or are you just using a different unit of measuring. I think it was 2 somthing LPH. Also, where do you have those other injectors located? And do you have any pics of the engine bay?

Thanks for the comments guys.

Anyhow Ill try to answer all the questions.

First off, I do not think I will be selling kits. I really encourage you guys to do your own kits. I built my complete kit, I am 19 years old. It was a pretty enjoyable experience, lots of time involved though. The thing is, my mx3 is my daily driver and I need it so I cant tear it down to fab kits.

I spent about $800 to assemble my kit, however I had half the parts already laying around.

On 5 psi I was off the chart rich the entire time. I didnt have my lm-1 hooked up at the time, this was the dyno wideband readings.

On the 8 psi pull, it was off the chart rich at peak boost. I did this intentionally since its far safer to be rich than lean (learned that the hard way with my MX6, 3 blown motors taught me well) After about 5k, it started to lean out and held about 12:1 the rest of the pull.

The pump I am using is a walbro 190 lph off www.autoperformanceengineering.com

I actually used to have it installed in my mx6.

AFAIK there are a few versions of the pumps: A 190 lph, a 190 lph high pressure, 255 lph, and a 255 lph high pressure.

I have some pics and the story of the car in my cardomain, link located in my sig.

I bet it spools fairly quick to becuase of how little charge pipe it must run through. LOL, with the VAF in that location is it alway all the way open? It is fairly easy to slide it back and forth, so I was wondering even with the wastegate open the turbo still pushes air. LOL so I was wondering if it even closes. Very nice though. Good to keep it rich. If you were to get it setup at a decent A/F ratio I bet you would see some more power for sure too. The only downside I see to your setup is that if you ever decided to run an air/air intercooler, routing the pipe might be a bit diffucult. But seeing you are using water injection you are all right. I know Jackson Racing makes a water/air intercooler for the miata that you prolly could get to fit. I bet that would help ya out alot. Just something to think about.

Yeah I get full boost around 4-4.5k. The vaf is going away with my standalone, so that should open me up for a little power, as well as the tuning. Cant wait :)

4-4.5K seems kinda high. My talon got there at about 3.8K. And that was running 16PSI. Do you think you may be running too big of turbo?

Yeah its laggy.

I think theres 2 things I can attribute to the slow spool. the first one you might shake your head at.... yup... you guessed it... my altitude. :)less air pressure, takes slightly longer to spool.

2nd off is yes, it is a pretty large turbo. The compressor exducer is actually 2.75"! Then again, no matter what turbo you have on the KL, it wont make peak power until 5-6k. Even if you have a smaller turbo. Thats where it peaks out n/a. Honestly, lag is not that bad. If I punch it from 2k it really sucks, but on the street when i want it to go, i take off from 4k+, and dont notice the lag a whole lot.

To be honest I think I'm going with a bigger turbo. This one netted me near 20 whp per psi of boost, so a bigger turbo will keep the trend going in the higher boost numbers.
