7000RPM redline...

Post by DJ »

Hey, I just had a question about the redline in the K8. I remember reading somewhere that the redline in the euro version is actually 7500... is that true? When you are really racing the engine it seems like it wants you to shift a little above 7000RPM otherwise when you get into second gear is drops you out of the powerband.

Thanks

Motor of my PRESSO (K8-ZE) actually can untwist to 7750 rpm:

But to untwist it more than 7500 rpm does not have a sense, If you can rapidly to select gear.

The fuel cutoff begins around 7500 RPM. I guess our tachs are a little off, so it'll look like you're out to 7800 RPM.

So why is the euro redline higher? It's the same engine isn't it?

Those engines have like 5-10 more hpI don't know how that was achived but I think that might have something to do with the 7500 rpm redline

Some confusion here. Euro cars (e.g. mine) have K8DE and are redlined at 7,000 rpm.

The K8ZE is JDM only, but we have no laws preventing the importation of used Japanese cars, so there are cars with K8ZE engines in Europe, principally UK and Ireland, because we drive on the right (i.e. left) side of the road, as do the Japanese. But you do find some JDM cars in other parts of Europe, where they drive on the wrong (i.e. right) side of the road :)

Yeah the jumpo from 1st to 2nd is a little to big. Even with my ZE I need to shift between 7300-7500 rpm going from 1st to 2nd. Otherwise it slows down a bit when I first get into 2nd.

I don't think your hurting anything going over 7k on the standard K8. In the other gear changes shifting at 6500-6800 seems to work best. The gaps betweens gears are much better spaced.

anything past 6800-7000 you introduce lash into the valve train and the higher you go the more you get and the more you get the more the lifter hit the top of the valve like a hammer and that is how retainers crack and vavles drop and the KL-ZE is the worst of the group because the intake springs are weaker than even the KL-DE springs but i dont know where the K8 sits in that regard

isn't hte redline of the USDM K8 6500? thats what my guages say, but I don't recall if my original guages had 7000 or 6500 since I put indiglos over them before I even registered my car & got it running.

I have hit 8k a few times missing gears with my klde..

and when I first turboed it I hit over 7500 rpms a few times cuz it wrapped out so fast and I wasnt expecting it.

Thats nuts that you guys rip them that high into the rpm range purposely. Isnt there supposed to be a rev limiter? there sure isnt on my car

According to the Mazda Factory Workshop Manual, engine speed is limited to 7,500rpm by fuel cut. I imagine a turbo setup could bypass that control.

In the section on testing the function, the book says "Holding the maximum rpm for more than 3 seconds can damage the engine".
