Manual transmission fluid

I'm putting a stock clutch in my GS this sunday and I dont think my tranny fluid has ever been changed.. Anyone got any ideas of some good tranny fluid out there? Will auto tranny fluid work? I found some B&M trick shifter fluid at autozone but its for an auto tranny.. Will this work in my manual tranny???

don't use ATF. Advance auto parts now carries redline oil.

Get some Redline MT90 gear oil. It should cost 8-10 dollars a quart. You'll need 4 quarts to fill it all of the way (it takes like 3.2 qts).

It is excellent fluid and can withstand higher temps and longer intervals before you have to change it. My shifts are pretty slick with it in my car. I use it in all of my Mazda's...kicks azz

I agree. I used it in both my v6's and it works very well.

I've actually been thinking about using mobile 1 g1-4 synthetic fluid since its oem or maybe synchro mesh.. But i was actually told that the tranny is only supposed to hold 2 and 4/5ths and not 4.. Please correct me if i'm wrong I dont wanna mess my car up.. Thanks for all your info guys it's very helpful..

Do Not use the Mobil 1, there is something in it thats supposedly harmful to our tranny, can't remember what it is off the top of my head though.

I tried Mobil 1, its horrible, I could only stand it about a week until I changed it. At the moment I'm using Royal Purple and it works great. Use either it or Redline.

You probably used the G1-5 oil which is bad for the synchros.. I believe you are supposed to use the G1-4 fluid.. It's only a small difference in the oil but the -5 hurts the copper synchro's..

It has sulphur like castorl and is bad for brass synchros..redline is sulphur free.

The MTX transaxle takes 2.9 US Quarts - you can't really overfill it, because that amount takes you to the lip of the filler hole in the side of the casing

You can overfill it if your car is parked on an incline while filling it....but hopefully you're only working on your car on a level surface.

Anyways, stick with Royal Purple or Redline. I use RP personally.

Well I went and picked up 3 quarts of Royal Purple 75W90 gear oil today so hopefully that'll do the trick...

That should do ya'. You may not notice a huge difference right away, but after a few hundred miles or so - or after the new lube's had time to work into all the nooks, you should notice a definite improvement.

Yes I also noticed that it took 200 miles to see the true difference.

Before putting in the Redline, should the tranny be flushed or anything? Or will just a good drain do the job?

There is no 'flush' for a manual transmission. The point of a flush in an automatic is that even with a drain, there's still another 5 quarts in the torque converter that won't come out unless you flush it. A manual tranny is basically one big common enclosure, so99% of the old fluid will come out with a simple drain.
