KL03 Distinguising characteristics
When i bought my car, they guy said he had done a KL03 swap, he also told me a lot of other things that turned out to be bull crap. SO, ive searched and searched but cant find much, is there anything that makes the stock engine different than a KL03, something that i can look to be stamped on the engine somewhere? He said he had papers on the engine and stuff, but he never gave them to me before he left for the navy. What can i look for to be sure it is the KL03? Thanks guys.

Re: KL03 Distinguising characteristics
A short straight neck intake manifold will tell you its a KL-03. Thats about it really. They look exactly the same besides the intake manifold. I got one and I can give you a pic of it in my engine bay if you want.

Re: KL03 Distinguising characteristics
There are a couple of stamps that will let you know. I'm not sure what they read on the KL-03, but the K8 (stock motor) reads K8101 on the heads. You probably can't read it with the engine in the car though. Your best bet it to look at the intake and see if it is different.

Re: KL03 Distinguising characteristics
Look on the block. There will be a stamp of "KL" if it is a kl03. The kl03 Intake manifold is not short and straight. It is stubby and angled slightly forward.

Re: KL03 Distinguising characteristics
I think last time I checked the KL-03 heads had KL-01 stamped on them. Just look in between the intake runners. The intake manifolds can be replaced with the stock ones they fit too. You could also look behind the motor by the passenger side, right besides the, I think its the power steering pump, on the block there should be a stamp with KL and some other numbers. If you see KL than its defintely a KL even if it has the stock 1.8 intake manifold

Re: KL03 Distinguising characteristics
I have a KL-03 in my car, and I've installed another one into my brothers car. The intake manifold is short and straight.

Re: KL03 Distinguising characteristics
The easiest way would be to either peek at the side of the engine heads for "KL01" or to pop the front valve cover off and see if the cams also read "KL01" instead of "K8"

Re: KL03 Distinguising characteristics
Well i finally got my car back from the shop, and ive found all kinds of different stamps and stuff on the engine, Under the rear side of the Valve cover is says K81A, and the IM says K802, but the hose going into the front valve cover says KL01. Heres a pic of the IM, Halfway down the page
I would post more pics but Cardomain is giving me problems logging in, so i used the stupid AOL profile thing. BTW you have to scroll halfway down the page and then scroll to the side to see the pic, not real sure why

Re: KL03 Distinguising characteristics
If your head has K801 cast into it, you are definitely rocking a stock motor, not a KL.
A lot of hoses and sensors are labeled "KL01" or "KL03" on the stock 1.8 K8-DE engine. For example, the fuel pressure regulator, stock exhaust manifolds, almost all of the hoses, and the oil cooler unit all have that cast into them (or have stickers with that printed on em).
KLDE's have KL03 on the block, KL01 on the camshafts & blue colored fuel injectors.

Looking at that pic you got on your site I'd say you got a stock 1.8L.

Re: KL03 Distinguising characteristics
Well see, thats kinda what ive started to think too, but there are still a couple of things i cant figure out, like when i couldnt get an inspection sticker because my reverse lights didnt work, and the mx-3 rev. light switch i got from mazda didnt work, which led me to believe that it wasnt the stock k8, and also, ive driven a couple of stock GS mx's and they didnt have the throttle response and pick up that mine has. And the guy that i bought it from, even before he talked about selling it, he was telling me about how he put a different engine in it and everything, and his dad is a mechanic and did it for him. And after i bought it he told me it still had a warranty on the engine and he would give me the papers. So i had no reason to doubt him. Thats what makes me wonder the most about it being stock.
But if it is stock, and i find him, i'll beat him, because i paid him a lot of money for this car, under the impression that it had a low mileage engine put in recently and was relatively free of problems. Up until now i handnt questioned it, but lately ive just realy started to wonder about it.
