Australian Eunos 30X air filter

Hello everyone.
I bought a Mazda Eunos 30X (as its known here) a few months ago. Wanted one after seeing them zip around town years ago in my Charade and wondering what they were.
The one I got is a V6 1.8L red one which I picked up suprprisingly cheaply after considering a used pulsar SSS. Although the SSS felt quicker it idled rougher and wasn't up to the 30X quality standards. The previous owner of the 30X obviously took better care of it too. I think Eunos 30X owners not only drive their cars, they love them too.

Anyway like most people here, I wanted it to personalise it with a muffler and a pod filter. I had an X-Force sports exhaust fitted and the car feels and sounds a heap better.

Then I went to replace the stock air filter and thats why I'm here. I went to two muffler workshops and one tuning shop to have one fitted in. They all said they couldn't do it because the airbox was of a "Euro" design, not japanse. What the heck does that mean?
They didn't even want to try to put a Pod filter, because they were not familiar with the Air flow metre and the three or four other tubes coming into the stock airbox. Two tubes look like its from the stock cold air intake, and another two or so thin tubes.
The tuning shop said that they can't put a pod filter because they didn't have the right brackets. He said he could use cable ties but thats kind of crappy and would fall off eventually, so I declined.

I didnt think it would be this difficult for such a simple mod, can someone explain how the Eunos 30X airbox works, including the sensors and what all those tubes that come out of the airbox do?

There's a couple of ways to do this, first you can replace your stock air filter with a K&N panel filter, you WILL notice the difference, secondly you could use the search feature of this Board, and lookup the Home Depot intake, it is important to get cold air to your pod filter, otherwise you are wasting time and money

Hey, I am in australia as well.
The air intake on this car gets alot of discussions on this board but IMO it is probably best just to replace the air filter with the k&N filter and leave your existing box.. In other words don't get a pod, they are great when the engine is cold but not so flash when the engine bay heats up at lights etc..
If you search you will be able to find the model number of the k&n filter you need. I think that they are around $140 AUD and you can get them repco, Autobarn etc.

I have a cold air intake, so i dont get the heat soak effect just a cone filter or short ram intake gets. I just adapted a 94+ integra intake. Made a few cuts and added in the VAF, hooked up all the hoses and your good to go.

Forget about all the theory of why cold is better than a stock intake - do it because it sounds great when the VRIS's open at 4,000+ rpm! Once you hear it for the first time you'll smile for a week!

Thanks for your responses. I will take Pipe's and Vicious' advice, I never thought about replacing the filter and keeping the stock airbox. I had T-Rose' setup in mind, but I think it will be much easier to get the K&N filter from Repco to make the car breath that much better and get the sweet induction sound I crave.

By the way - T Rose, you must have moved your radiator bottle to the left a bit to make room for that intake - it looks sweet. One mechanic who looked at my engine bay commented that it wasn't possible for a pod filter because that bottle was in the way. I also see you completely removed the stock cold air intake.

I've got the K&N replacement element in the stock airbox, and there is a slight improvement in smoothness and power. The big deal (according to K&N) is that it stays good for 50,000 miles, whereas the paper filters gradually clog.

Don't expect a different sound - I didn't notice any. That's probably because the air inlet (where the sound would come out) is at the front of the hood.
