ok so I'm going to change my oil in my 1992 1.8 I will be replacing the oil filte also... <p>from what I have read I have found that I will need 4.2 quarts but I have also read that I will only need 4 quarts... can someone help me out here which one is right <p>Thank you,

1.8 litre, with oil filter change, 4.2 US Quarts; without oil filter change 3.9 US Qt.<p>I measured out the first, and it brought the level exactly to the top mark.
Re-shaped and re-sized gearshift lever. Best driveability mod you can do!

I think you're splitting hairs here. As long as you don't have oil consumption, I'd think you'd be OK only putting in 4 quarts.
