Sunroof problems ....

Post by RCaputi »

Hope this is the right area....
I had bought my Mx3 a couple of years ago, the factory sunroof works but I need to "help" it open and close. Doesn't seem to "catch" when I push the open/close switch. I was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers as to what to look for, useful sites that could explain what I should be looking for. I'm not super mechanically inclined, just a little ;)
Thanks in advance.

Mine does the same thing some times, I don't really consider it a huge issue though.
Most of the time it will open ok on it own but some times I have to poke it for it to catch and open.
Unless it seriously will like never open I wouldn't worry about it too much, to repair it might be really expensive, there is tons and tons of parts in there that have to be presice or it won't work.

I just won't open unless I shove it. Kinda sucks if I want to close it in a hurry because I'd have to stop and get out, push it down from the outside as I push the switch.

You might try to grease the track with a little axle grease. It may be dirty and dry.
Does the motor whine like it is under strain to close? If so then grease should help. If not then it sounds like you might have a motor or mechanical problem.

That sounds like a plan. It does sound like it's under some strain, a sort of "grinding/reving" sound, and it also clicks as if it can't grab on to something. I'm gonna give the grease a shot.
Thanks guys!

Mine's a little balky too, even after a pretty good cleaning of the rails and new grease (you'll need something thin to scrape all the gunk).
Also, when I shut the door, it noticeably "pops" up a bit, as if it weren't tightly shut. Is this common?

Yeah, mine "pops" up when I shut the doors too.
Even driving on the highway, it kinda creeps open a little.

Yes, Mine pops up too, when shutting the doors. Proves the door seals are good. :)
Re-shaped and re-sized gearshift lever. Best driveability mod you can do!
Extra thick soundproofing in the boot (trunk) to quieten my stainless steel exhaust system :)
