Fumes

Post by Coodoodxx »

Lately ive been smelling gas fumes when my car is almost warmed up, im not sure if its because of the -30 temp. Or if maybe somthing else is wrong. If anyone else has had this problem or knows what it is please let me know. Thank

Hi there.
I have the same problem.
Is it using a lot of oil?
I dont know how to say it in english but I think it's named gaskets?
(called kleppen in Dutch)
There are rubbers seals on the gaskets.
If there are leaking it will burn oil.
Does it smell like that?

watch where you park and the angle the car is on...

It may be the gas tank, might be a hole or more commonly the seal where the sending unit is.

I think I may have an answer. Do you notice the gas smell only when your tank is past half full?
I have a friend who has similar issues. Mazda mechanic said although there is no obvious leaks, the top part of the gas tank is rusting, therefore the fumes are emitting. They said it can't be repaired, only replaced. Quoted replacement tank $400cdn. At these astronomical gas prices it's hard, but I guess it's good reason for everyone to keep their gas tanks full, especially if your car is going to be sitting. Less chance of rust damage. Hope this helps.

If you want I can have a look at your car sometime. It's supposed to warm up on Thursday (tomorrow). What part of the city are you in? I'm downtown in the SW.

Man that sucks. Those tow trucks always seem to wreck something on the car. They cracked my radiator when I had the car towed once before. Let me know if you still want to hook up.

That seems to be a common problem. I have a '92 GS, and so does a friend of mine. Whenever I fill it up, it reeks. I usually only go about 20 litres or so (half way I guess) to avoid it. As a previous poster said, it seems to be a rusting issue and replacement is the only solution.
