 $136!!??? I got mine for like $80 at Pep Boys. One more thing, mx6 wires will be a little longer, since they go around the manifold...

NOT sure about the KLDE, but on the ZE, and KL the wires to the first 3 cylinders (the ones in the back) go around the manifold, so the have to be longer, just the ones for the back, while on a 1.8 they kinda go on top of the manifold,
I don't have any pics, but you can just look for some under the hood pics to get the idea

If you get aftermarket wires for the MX-6, or Probe then you should be good. I thought stock Probe, MX-6, and MX-3 wires are all 7mm NGK. In which case getting the stock wires from one shouldn't change anything. Its upgrading to 8mm high voltage wires that can make a difference.

do they necessarily *have* to go around the manifold? or is that just for aesthetics?

I phoned a local Mazda dealership a couple days ago and asked them what the price was on spark plug wires for a 92' GS. They said C$140.00 and that they are manufactured by NGK.

Yes, NGK wires and spark plugs are the best for K series it seems. Many owners sware by them and you can't beat publicity like that. If you do get them though get 8mm instead of stock 7mm

But if they're still 7mm you won't experiance any gains, you'll just have extra wires in the engine bay. You need to go larger if you might possibly see any gains. All wires do anyway is ensure proper spark is being sent, if you have inefficient wires or spark plugs then you aren't getting what you could from the engine.
