What kind of muffler lets the V-6 sing sweetest?

I finally dealed my brother in law out of his MX-3, now give me some opinions on exhaust systems. What are y'all using and how does it sound?-RAA

Thanks for the info guys, and Pelado(been through your home town many times-nice place, BTW) I'll try that search(I'm new to this format B-board-haven't found the search function yet). I'm just getting back into messin' with cars. I was in the past a rabid Pontiac fan. I still love them. I had a number of GTO's. My favorite was a '66 which I had swapped into a 428 which was factory rated at 390 hp...and that was before the mods(porting, camming, headers, 800 cfm Holley, etc.). I feel right at home with the MX-3...its underrated, poorly covered by the aftermarket, overlooked, but....vastly superior. This seems to go for Mazda in general. It seems that Honda is the Chevy of the imports. Its great to find this board and I look forward to learning alot.<P>I wonder how a turbo muffler, or Flow Master would sound on this racebreed V-6.-RAA

RAA, on probetalk several guys were very uncomplimentary of how a Flowmaster sounded on a 2.5L Probe (however, I think they were all talking about the same car). I've got a Pacesetter catback which sounds OK but it does drone some at 2-3K (where I seem to spend most of my time) but since the KLZE swap that's diminished. Musta been that 1.8L exhaust gas velocity thing.

You know I was just thinking, the pulse pattern on V-6 has to be somewhat similar to a V-12...I'd love to get a peek at what Ferrari uses. My goal is to get that sophisticated sound they have. I have heard some...dare I say it...Mitsubishis...that were close. Through the stock system on mine I can hear the potential. Performance IS of course top priority so I will be striving to integrate the two.<P>Hey, I too am very interestted in swapping up to a 2.5L(I see you have done it). I am concerned on a couple of points however: 1. Does the 2.5 have the same motorcyle-like eagerness to rev that the 1.8 has and high redline? 2. Is it as silkie smooth?-RAA<P>P.S. What is the true redline on these motors? I know the tach has it at seven grand, but I've read Vaugh Y.'s account on his 2.5 swap where he mentions throwing of a balancing weight at 7,400. Also why is the jap-spec 2.5 so much more powerful than the america version...I would have thought they had worst emission standards than we do(I know it probably has to do with cam timing etc. but can you tell me, or point me to a place, were I can find out the specific differences).

I'm still very happy with my $150 exhaust system from JC Whitney...sounds sweet, looks nice...cheap...

Yes<BR>2. Yes<BR>P.S.<BR>Check out the V-6 FAQs. JDM engines don't use EGR. They do pay higher taxes I believe for higher HP and gas sucking cars. This is why there is a huge market there for 400cc motorcycles and those nifty 500cc kei automobiles. The kei autos are limited to 55HP I believe.

I loved how my K8 sounded with open manifolds after the flexpipe. Everybody said it sounded like an italian sportbike above 5k. Suppose mean piston speeds and rod ratios affect sound too....

I forget who it was that had the sweet sounding exhaust system on their 4cyl. They posted a wav file of it on here. It sounded really deep and powerful.. if someone remembers who it was (or if the poster sees this) please enlighten us to the exhaust system used. Thanks!

Thanks!</STRONG><HR></BLOCKQUOTE><P>it was a powertech muffler ONLY, no piping. the muffler is straight-through design with stock piping and a silencer. the silencer was still in during the recording which gave it that 'ripping/climbing' sound of the exhaust. taking it out makes me deaf. i got it for $100 from a close friend of mine who had it on his 240sx. iono where he got it. ill be selling it in around a few months or so when i finish my exterior work and get a hks titanium tipped dual cannister muffler.

flowmaster 60 series(i think, its specifically made for small displacement import motors.) no resonator and 2.25 cat back piping. nice and deep at low rpm and isnt excessivly loud at wot. DOES NOT sound anything like a weedwhacker honda. just a nice tone.<BR>Dan

How does a pacesetter cat-back system sound on the GS. I'm not interested in a "bumble bee on steriods sound", I just want to upgrade to a bigger pipe and get a better flowing muffler. I'm not looking to spend much money.
