2.5 V6 horsepower model year vairance

Post by Cage »

I was told by a Mazda tech today that that 626 (1997 model) hp is 164 @ the crank and the 1999 626 is 170 hp @ the crank. The reason he explained had to do with the change to a Mass airflow sensor. The mpg went up 1 as-well as Torque by 3 foot pounds. I then asked why did the reduce the hp to 161 the following year with no increase to MPG ...he had no answer. typo ??
any thoughts on this?

specs:
1993-1997
V6, 2.5 liters, DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder, fuel injection
Bore and stroke: 3.33 x 2.92 inches (84.5 x 74.2 mm)
Compression ratio: 9.2:1
Horsepower (SAE net): 164 @ 5600 rpm
Torque (ft-lb): 160 @ 4800 rpm
3.31, 1.83, 1.31, 1.03, 0.80 final 4.11

1998-2002
V6, 2.5 liters, DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder, fuel injection
Bore and stroke: 3.33 x 2.92 inches (84.5 x 74.2 mm)
Compression ratio: 9.2:1
Horsepower (SAE net): 170 @ 6000 rpm (2001: 165 @ 6000 rpm)
Torque (ft-lb): 163 @ 5000 rpm (2001: 161 @ 5000 rpm)
3.31, 1.83, 1.31, 1.03, 0.84 final 4.11

I'm not sure where you're getting the 161 figure from but I would bet that your guess is correct, it's a typo.
I noticed the 99 626 also got the Millenia style intake which should be a performance enhancement.

Numbers I found:
2002 Millenia
Engine 2.5-Liter Dual Overhead Camshaft,
24-Valve, V6
Bore and Stroke (in.) 3.33 x 2.92
Displacement (cu. in.) (cc) 152 (2497)
Compression Ratio 9.2:1
Horsepower (SAE net @ RPM) 170 @ 5800
Torque (SAE net lb-ft @ RPM) 160 @ 4800
2002 626
Engine 2.5-Liter Dual Overhead Camshaft,
24-Valve, V6
Bore and Stroke (in.) 3.33 x 2.92
Displacement (cu. in.) (cc) 152.4 (2497)
Compression Ratio 9.5:1
Horsepower (SAE net @ RPM) 165 @ 6000
Torque (SAE net lb-ft @ RPM) 161 @ 5000
I have no idea why there's a difference since they appear to be the same engine
on paper and under the hood. In fact, the Millenia has slightly less CR. The only possible ways are (1) cams - not likely, (2) ECM mapping - possibly, (3) marketing Millenia as higher end car over 626 - that's where my money is. ;)
