Every once n' a while i have one speaker totally crack

Post by zytariuk »

Every once n' a while my front left speaker will just crack out (sounds like the speaker is blowen). So what i do is just put the fader to 100% for the rear, until i get the time to look at the speaker. But then like a day goes by or something and i think "What the hell, im gonna try it again."....and it's working fine!!!
So what's going on here guys? Sometimes the speaker acts like it's blowen, and then other times it's perfectly fine. Note, each speaker is getting 50watt (since im just running off deck power).
[ March 16, 2003: Message edited by: zytariuk ]

its probably right on the border line of being blown, or a tinsel lead is just a little loose or something. Take it out and look at it.

What the heck is a tinsel lead? How can i blow a speaker with 50watts when it can handle up to 110?

I would say the wire connected to the speaker are loose. Closeing the door probably wiggles the connection enough that you are getting bad contact.

Either you have a bad connection or moisture is getting to the speaker thru the crack in the window. When the moisture dries up... problem goes away. Buy some XTC baffles.

I've seen tons of those break off or touch metal/bare wire. Take it out and check it over visually. While you ahve it out put a multimeter up to it and check the ohm load. Or if you don't have a multimeter move the cone in and out and see if it sounds scratchy.
And distortion from the HU can blow speakers very easily. If the bass on the HU is too high, regardless of the power it puts out it can damage speakers. Also, underpowering is just as much or more harm than overpowering.

Actually I would say that underpowering speakers is much worse. And you are not getting 50 watts believe me. Your Head Unit might say 50 watts, but that is peak power. That is the power that the unit can deliver for a brief period. The much more meaningful number is RMS power, which is the power it can deliver over an extended period. You most likely have 25 RMS watts. So you could have definitely been underpowering your speakers, causing bad distortion and damage.
