Help choosing quiet exhaust system

Post by Typhoonk »

What's up.
I am looking at making my mx a quiet mx.
I loved my muffler setup on the SOHC. But now I have the BP and its overly loud at normal driving RPM's, and when I giv'r to get on the high way, or just accelerate fast - it is way loud and almost gives me a headache most days.

So I thinking I would just go back to a stock setup (protege LX stock system).

Unless anybody has a better way?
What I have now is 2" pipe from the cat back, as well as a resonator, then a dual ractive muffler on the back (cheapy muffler).

does the muffler have the silencer in it? and have you checked to make sure there are no leaks farther up in the exhaust system? mine started to get really loud on my protege and i found a crack had developed near the resonator right under the front seats so it was extremely loud

At cork sport they sell the BRULLEN Cat Back Exhaust System. Under the description it says "When purchasing a Cat-Back system the customer has the following options: Loud or quiet, single or dual tip, 3"-3 1/2"- 4"-5" DIA, resonated or Hollow Tips, angle cut or straight or DTM tip. All Cat-Back systems use all original hanger locations and do not receive any modifications (Bolt-On system) With the exception of a very few systems all of our Cat-Back's come with an inline straight through resonator to help control the sound volume."
My exhaust is too loud also. I have been thinking about getting one of these systems and opting for the quieter setup.

Nope, don't got any holes. I would have heard it more up front. But I just had it checked at speedy, and they just say I have a shorter muffler, so the engine noise and resonance creates a louder 'rumble' through the whole rpm range.
But since I have it custom made (not bolt-on), I have to replace from the cat back.
Thinking of a slightly smaller tube, with a more OEM like muffler, but still keeping the inline resonator.

i don't think you would even have to go to smaller pipes, just get a muffler that isn't "straight-through".

my pacesetter 2 1/4 cat back exhaust sounds pretty decent/quiet and is way cheaper than the brullen one...about $190 there are some fitment issues though with the muffler

I have been told recently by people in the industry that Richard is considering closing the doors at Brullen in the near future. If you order one make sure the retailer can deliver.

Depending on whether you are trying to reduce the sound level overall or only remove cabin resonance as to what you need to do. Some times something as simple as a resonated tip will change the sound significantly inside the cabin. A good resonator will tone down certain frequencies depending on it's physical size. At the same the resonance chambers will also help performance by allowing the exhaust to expand pulling more exhaust gases out of the combustion chamber.
