Upgrades?

Hi I'm new here. I have a 1993 MX-3 with the 4-cyl 5-speed and I want to get more HP out of it. I want to start with upgraded exhaust, intake, and computer chip and can't seem to find sellers of aftermarket Mazda parts that will fit. Any other suggestions on the more cost-effective upgrades and the better brand names to use are certainly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

hi, you have many choices, you have ractive and obx-r stinless steel exhausts for a good price, you can also go to top brands such as APEXI,TANABE,HKS or VIBRANT for BIG BUCKS and probably the same gains in power. for filters you have ractive, hks,KN,FK, and much more, depends on what you want to do with your engine. the chips is a little harder for me to explain, IM getting to that part now, I got hold of a GIWASA ADDIPROM kind of (PIGGY BACK) once Ive tried it ILL post the results, GIWASA claims a increase of 10HP to the 1.6DOHC. will see... :p

First off the engine he has is probably the SOHC. Seeing its a 93. The best website for parts that i have found is www.corksport.com They have a wonderful collection. A little pricey but you are getting the best. Alos eBay is good for the intakes. They are cold air ones and are an ok price. You could make it for less if ya knew what you were doing. Other then that i would probably accually keep your engine stock then swap in a BP-Turbo for Power. Corksport would do that too. Well, other then that use the search feature and it will get you lots of extra upgrade threads. There was one started not a little bit ago.

if you have the sohc turbo or swap thats it.

dohc can be worked with well at least im trying. intake/ exhuast wont be all that much of a help yet but it can be with the help of forced induction.

the chip is not a good idea.
They do more harm than good.
They only fool the computer into thinking the incoming air is colder than it actully is causing your engine to run really rich.
I don't recomend this mod.

Thanks. Great site. Yeah mine is the SOHC. I thought about doing an engine swap at some point but thought it might be hard with the 4cyl. The V6 I've heard is incredibly difficult to swap, so would it be easier swap the 1.8L T4cyl (BPturbo) w/approx 210 HP (from GTR), or the 1.6L T4cyl (B6T) w/approx 132 HP? I'd love the bump to 210 HP, but don't know what else I would need to change and what it would cost in labor?

The BPT swap really isnt that difficult except when it comes to the turbo set-up. And even that would be only marginally difficult.

The B6-ZET is about the same work if you swap one that was made turbo by mazda (I assume the engines are practically the same externally). But, the B6-ZET and the engine sitting in your car have the same displacement. Thus, turboing you origonal engine might be the path you wish to take. Since you likely have the B6-ME you are at a slight disadvantage to the B6-ZET/B6-ZE (DOHC engines)with added turbo.

The choice is yours. Personally, (if I had the money) I would choose BP-ZE then turbo the hell out of it for the most power.

Acually Corksport will do the whole swap. Even find the BPT engine and everything. I got a qoute around $5500 with the front mount intercooler (FMIC) and piping too. They are located in Portland, Oregon. A little too far for you i think. However, there is a shop up in Ontario i beleive that does it all for cheaper then Corksport without the FMIC and piping thou. But i bet they could do that too. Just use the search feature. Its a great tool. But yeah the BPT is the way I would go if i had the $$. Maybe by the end of the summer i will. But i think if i was to go to all the trouble of doing a turbo i would just go with an engine that has already been turboed and is not going to blow up.

BP-ZE was meant for turbo...this is why I would use it, and have a completely costum turbo set-up rather then the OEM one that came on BP-ZET...

What all does that include....
Basicly just the engine put in and running right...you still would have to add up fuel systems and cv shafts and trannie and clutch and such....hahaha oh how i hate to look at it like that. I'll be spending closer to 10 grand by the time I actually do an engine swap heh.

I believe you replace the mx-3 throttle body for an escort throttle body

does CORKSPORTS apply custom turbos on the 1.6 dohc???? with stock internals???

No accually Corksport does the tranny, the engine, the blow off valve, Front mount, piping, and engine mounts. Its the whole shabang! It is a pretty nice price because they are quick too. I think only a couple days to do it all. And it comes with the ECU redone by them. Its really nice....
