Fuel gauge- Fuel pump sending unit ???

Post by jap-spec »

Ok, I'm starting to get annoyed with the fuel gauge. Whenever I press on the gas, the fuel gauge moves down closer to E and then whenever I stop and the cars idling it goes back up. I'm wondering if this is common in the 1993 MX3 cars? From having owned other cars I have not seen this problem before. What can be the problem? Is it the actual fuel gauge that needs to be changed or is it the fuel pump sending unit that needs to be changed?

My best guess is that it is the fuel pump sending unit. I am hoping there is a fast and easy way of fixing this, by taking apart the fuel pump and seeing if any of the screws on the sending unit arm are loose. I am just wondering if anyone has gone through this and fixed it because I don't want to go spend money on a new fuel pump sending unit if I don't have to.

The fuel gauge position corresponds to the sending unit float position. The float is attached to an "arm" which changes position based on fuel level in the tank. Low fuel level will have the float near the bottom of the tank thus low fuel gauge reading on the dash. The fuel tank shape, as well as an anti-spash "wall" that surrounds the float when near empty, is designed to minimiz erratic fuel gauge readings. However, if you changed the geometry of the car (that is, jacked up either the front or rear end)or engage in rapid acceleration/decelaertion (especially when the tank is 1/4 or less full)the fuel will "slosh" over the wall and cause the gauge to "appear" to be erratic. You can verify this next time you have 1/8 tank or less. Just go up or down a steep hill and notice the changes in the fuel gage. Remember the tank float does just what it is to do; float on top of the fuel. The fuel just flows to where gravity or initeria tell it to be. Hope this helps.
