I just replaced the clutch on my car, with the help of my dad. Obviously, HAYNES does not make a manual for the Mx-3 but they do make one for the Ford Probe/Mazda 626 and Mx-6, so i got that, since the Mx6 and Mx-3 are about the same.
You have a big problem here. If the shaft goes in halfway, then you will most likely have to disassemble the transmission. The Manual said that when removing the drive shafts, a socket that is nearly the same diameter as the toothed portion of the drive shaft (that goes into the transmission) should be inserted into the cavity, to prevent the gear that is on the inside, from dropping. If the shaft will not go in, ,then the gear has dropped. To make sure, look into the hole, and see if you can see a cylinder that has grooves in it (that mates with the grooved portion of the drive shaft which is the far half.) If you cant see it, or if it is not aligned with the smooth portion, you'll have to disassemble the transmission. Get the haynes auto manual for the mazda mx-6, it will help you a lot. I used this guide to replace the clutch, and it was a great help.
If you dont have time, take it to a shop. My dad and i started monday, and we got everything back together today.... except the fact that we messed up the tie rods, so we're waiting on those, so the car should be on the pavement mid afternoon tomorrow. i'm so excited.
Mike
