Boring out :)

Post by Timmyd865 »

Hey guys! So I'm in the process of finishing my advanced high school auto class. We just got done putting out engine back together. I need to do this! So I talked to my dad about it! He's down w/me taking apart my engine. I usta be a F/I buff... but my parents never wanted me to boost :) SO yeah. Does anyone know where I can get miata cams, and do they make a difference? Cause you think about it, the miata 1.6 has like 130 hp, what's the difference between that engine and ours? Maybe intake mani, and cams. So, I could probably drop those cams in after over boring to maybe 1.8. Then, port and polish the head. Custom intake, full exahust, throttle body, and I'd have it done. I'm hoping to maybe get like 150 CRANK hp out of it. I think it'd be possilbe. But, yeah.. where to find cheap miata cams, and any other help on old schooling this engine would be great :) Thanx guys! Oh, also Pistons and rods, which ones to go w/? Any that would improve performance would help.. like a higher compression piston would be cool. OHH YEAH, AND, maybe sum ignition stuff to raise the redline once all that craps done :) Thanx guys :) CYA!

all the stuff you need you can get from flyin miata or toda racing <p>http://www.todaracing.com/products/mazda_miata/camshafts.html<p>. the safest you can bore the dohc to would be 1.63l. which is a 1mm overbore. you will want to bump the compression up <p>http://www.flyinmiata.com/store/prodinfo.asp?number=04-69120&variation=&aitem=5&mitem= 10<p> get the wiseco 11:1 pistons and keep your rods. alot of port and polishing will be needed also. you engine will also benefit from lightened parts also(flywheel, crank, rods, pistons). it wouldnt hurt to get the engine assemly balanced as well.<p>
in the long run in will be a waste of money when u can turbo it or get a b6t for under 1500. i would assume there would be more tuning and driveabilty problems with a high compression engine than that of a normal engine with a turbo hanging from it.<p>ever thought of going with nitrous? its on tap when u need it and if you get a wet kit it will have less problems than that of a turbo or all motor setup. <p>there are a number of options you have. dont limit yourself to the old way of boring out a motor. it just wont work for your setup.<p>[ April 20, 2003: Message edited by: boostedmx ]</p>

i've always thought i could boost, even swap.. but my rents are only pretty much down w/me doing internal work... I don't wanna go over board.. just like get 150 crank power.. or like 135 WHP and i'd be happy! Thanx guys

the 1.8l is a good option. but with the b6t manifold bolting right up and no wiring or removing of engines you could surpass that hp level. but, if you are left with no other choice the 1.8 is the best option for you.<p>[ April 21, 2003: Message edited by: boostedmx ]</p>

Yeah go with a 1.8 then start your work from there.. i belive you can overbore it to a 1.9. The motor is a much better platform for haulin balls..

i really hope your not gonna put it in the mx-3. for one its a nissan not a mazda motor. plus oh yeah rwd not fwd. please dont come on here saying $hit like that. if you have read the many posts and info on the bpt and b6t you would know that they are just as capable as the sr20det. at any rate good luck if you really wanna put in the sr20 but id say put the bpt or b6t in and go from there.

hey i saw your post... i just rebuilt my engine this past summer... it was beat to hell so i basically took it out entirely, bought an engine repair kit (cost me damn near 500 bucks)... in the process or boring out and honing the cylinder blocks, i took out the head entirely and in my machine shop, with aid of a bridgeport drill press, opened up the holes which the gaskets lie on... i totally forget the name of those holes, but if you have tha chance to open em up youll notice a difference in horespower overall. you have to be certain to do the intake and exhaust openeings, as to allow for more flow of air in and more out. with this in mind, you will need a better intake, i mean a cone filter worked for me, but i custom designed the piping and tubing for this intake in anattempt to creat a cold air intake for the mx. headers would be nice, i just havent done them yet (in the midst of creating my own), but either way you look at it, when you do have a chance to get the head down, clean it off. put on the gasket and you will notice a black border/edging line around the head itself and notice that the gaskets are larger than the hole opening. when trying to find out why mazda didnt just open them up, both a specialist at a high performance engine repair shop (hot rod work) and specialists at my local mazda dealership both told me because they didnt want to take the time to do so, and wanted to limit the hp coming out of it... i dunno how valid that is... but try it out, but be very careful... good luck.
