gear ratios

Post by whinypunk »

i have noticed that my car has very short shift patterns. i have not seen a car that has such short shifting. i mean the reccomended shifting into 5th gear is 45. that seems really low for a 5 speed. what other cars have shifting like ours?

Recommended shifting into 5th gear is 45?!?! Damn, I usually cruise in 4th at 45 going with just under 3,000 rpms. Shift into 5th gear at about 55 or 60 mph.

Hmmm, you talking about 4,500 rpms? Or 45 mph? That just hit me.

I usually shift into 5th at 40mph. Mainly for gas mileage.

that should be how it is stock, maybe shift into 5th at 50, peak torque is at 4000rpm, so if you are racing ( dunno why cause the sohc is slow compared to most all cars on the road )I say keep on it till 5k, then shift, just to hold peak rpm for a bit but not hit redline.

I've beaten a v-6 ford ranger with my SOHC, that was a fun race, I only beat him cause my I was shifting at about 6,000 rpms and his redline starts a 5000.

LOL, ok my car isn't being driven until repairs are made. One thing I must add though is my other car is a 01 neon. In the users manual it shows 3 different shift pattens, 1 for economy, 1 for crusing and 1 for performance. The one for performance tells you to shift out of 4th to 5th gear at 110mph. Now that is cool. I have driven the car and it is a 3speed(all they had in a automatic neon until 03) and at 110 its just over 4k like 4200 so I know they aren't kidding.
