How is a cold air Intake any colder?

I got a question for you. Maybe I'm not thinking of sumthin, or I'm just mixed up, but how do these "cold air intakes" really work? If you replace the rubber intake with a shiny piece of metal, won't it just heat up faster w/the engine? Cause when my friends civic gets done driving, his intake pipe is steaming. It's "cold air" and I don't see how on earth that's making the car faster. The only thing I can think of is that it improves air flow. But I don't see how it can make the air any colder... <P>What do you guys think? thanx!

where is you friends intake filter sitting? a true cai the filter is usualy at the bottom of the car (below the engine) so it dosn't take in hot air from the engine

It pretty much is a piece of metal ( i don't know what kind of metal ) and it prety much replaces the factory rubber hose that goes to the air box. It has just a cone filter at the end right where the air box normally is, then piping up to the throttle body.

it's not a cold air intake then, usually the piping goes down to the bottom (you can't see the filter)

Yeah, you'd think so, but like all these company's (looking through like SuperStreet, and Import Tuner) and stuff all show just the pretty shiny ones that stop at the filter where the air box was....

ok, its not reall cold air, its more of cool air. if you want you can easily make a custom air intake outta pvc piping, i did it and it works nicely, but its remporary and i did a lot of custom fitting to the thing so be ready for a lil bit of time put into it. if you want a parts list contact me on aim, same name as on here...so the jiff of it all is where you are getting your air from and how heat resistant your material is. so place it low, but not too low so you dont suck in water snow and all the other elements...get some good heat resistant material and a good filter. itll do you good. and do ur exhaust too, more air in means more air out and when you can push it out faster and take it in faster thebetter you are. anyone else with some info just hit it up. good luck to all with ur cars and peace out

I had the same setup as your friend... took off the stock filter and shoved a cone filter on the end (doing that doees not constitute it as a cold air intake). All it did was make me sound like an airplane... weee!<BR>I found that when it was sucking in the hot engine air under the hood my acceleration would choke/choppy a little before 300rpms. Basically it lacked a nice smooth acceration.<P>After I finished my homemade intake to suck cold air from the bottom of the car (<A HREF="http://www.mx-3.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb. ... 3&t=001441" TARGET=_blank>click here to see the pictures</A>), I found my acceleration to be more on the smooth side with a little more off the line. So I guess it gave me more low end acceleration.<BR>Changing your exhaust to something more high flow will give you more high end acceleration, or as they call it "Zoom Zoom!"<P>I know my setup is cheap looking but it works... just gotta see if it'll work in the winter... aka not suck up snow and water... yikes that would be back.

im hacin the same question of winter... now i know i could just make a shorter one for the winter and i just may....or just remove my long piece goin down...i really need to get pics of it. its such a homedepot job(i did get all the parts from there too!! exept the filter) but it works. and i honestly suggest it to anybody who wants a lil more air that dont want to pay 200 bucks...i mean its not as good but its good. like i said just ask for a parts list and ill get it to ya. but about the winter deal...i have a lot of that plastic that was at the bottom cut off for air to reach my filter better and im going to make, for winter only, a guard that will push snow away from it...hope it works and ill let ya'll know. peace out all.
