why did my transmission light go off?

Hey guys, help me out. I had recently replaced the hullifax (the wiring harness) inside my distributor by my trusted mechanic. But since that time, the orange Tranny light (top left dash) has been lit on. What could be the problem? I have noticed that there is quite a buildup of tranny fluid surrounding my transmission. Could that mean that I'm low on fluid?
