Excellent site Taras. What do you think....one 90mm and one 50mm in each lighting unit (Xenon types probably, right).

David - What dimension openings are you allowing for in these units? There must be certain light fixtures that are being used in the design and mold process. I would think you would need these first.

yeah im not sure on the sizes yet, but like i said this is just in the idea stage and any imput is valuable for making a good product....like Gro's opinion to only have two spots and i like that idea and that is how its going to come out....and i like the sound of one 90mm and one 50mm.....and sorry if it takes me a while to reply to anyone cause im in the middle of packing so that i can move....but yeah, does anyone have a price on the 90mm and 50mm units.

Gothcha David........Couldn't capture a price list from that Hella site, but our BC illumination wizard (Taras) has a pretty good handle on that...hell he's got a handle on all of that "Lumin" stuff.

Taras.....what's your spin on this......what light/size combo would be best suited?

John,

I am sure any quality (from the lighting standpoint) units for our car would get everybody's thumbs up. We all want to see better at night.

If that would be me, I certainly would take into consideration of what units would be used with the housing. You need to provide the clearance in all directions and still make sure that you have enough room left such that each unit is adjustable.

As far as a choice for Hella universal units is concerned. Many of the great adavatages that they provide is that they have/are:

-Choice of Low beam (Halogen/Xenon/Bi-Xenon), High Beam (Halogen/Xenon), Fog Beam (Halogen).
-DOT legal (even in HID/Xenon).
-Come with adjuster screws, even if bought individually.
-Fully Weather Sealed
-Have connectors available
-Good aftermarket support with various proven options (like H9(Halogen) to D2S(Xenon) conversion)
-Easily available as replacement if yours gets broken (stones, accidents, baseball bats).

Pricing on 90mm units could be found (50mm units are not released yet in NA):
http://www.rallylights.com/hella/headlamps.asp

As far as debate on 90mm vs 50mm is concerned. I have not seen the beam patterns of 50mm units, but prior reports suggest (I know a guy that has them already) that their output is very close to 90mm units. Although, I would still try to stuff a 90mm H9 High Beam unit beside a 90mm Low Beam (mind you, I have a set of brand new 90mm Bi-Xenon Universal units kicking around at home). The reason for this is that 90mm units use H7 or H9 bulbs both a much better bulb than H3 used in 50mm units. Although 50mm fog units would be based on a current Micro DE series and the fog beam should be amazing. Low beam probably be good too, and of course 90mm is a must because, primarily, it's do much easier to upgrade to overwattage or Xenon.

Theoretically, both 90mm units should fit together if the whole new housing is being built. I have not tried, so don't rely on me in this one.

Taras.

90mm see above post
50mm not yet announced
50mm should be very similar to 90mm, but both are going up in mid Feb/2005.

The 90mm Hella highs and lows will fit into the stock housing (barely). Me and Patdiesel have just completed a custom built fiberglass enclosure to mount them. This has been a learning expeirence for the both of us through lots of trial and error and we are really excited to see it finally work. It has taken over a year to complete but well worth the effort put into the lights. As a matter of fact, we just finished aiming them and the lighting output from the H9's are bad a--! There are some minor bugs in the aiming procedure, so the cutoff is not perfect but we're close.

We paid $57 for the high and low beam projectors.

Pat will have to post the pics when he's ready. The projector project has been kept a close secret untill now.

Does this mean that there will be more made (for a reasonable fee of course) to a humble few of us?................humble...humble....humble......
Can't wait for the pics.

O.k, heres the deal with having projector housings made for other people. As of right now, myself and Patdiesel will have the first two sets of lights. I'm going a slightly different route by installing the 90mm xenon lights. Pat has the H9 lows and highs. Anyways, there is talk of making a builders kit. The kit would include the facia necessary to mount the 90mm Hella lamps. You would have to trim out the stock housing carefully because you don't want to cut the wrong part of the lamp. We would recommend taking the project to someone who knows what they are doing with fiberglass and body filler, because thats what pretty much makes up the final appearance of the lamps. It's not that difficult to work with, it will just take time and practice to get it right. The project was about 40% fiberglass/bodyfiller and about %60 sanding.

The work involved just to fit the lamps from sanding would make you sick. We had to trim off some of the lamp to make them fit in the stock housing. It's a tight fit by any means. Some of the frame was cut so the outside lamp would not come in contact with it. The stock lenses were completely sanded smooth on the inside and out.

If we did the kit, it would not come with projectors or the connections to wire it up. It would only include instructions to fit the lamps into the stock housing and a fiberglass "face" to insert into the lamps. You would basically be doing the work...

Any opinions on a "builders kit" are welcome...

JayDog,

I have a few comments/questions:
jaydog5678 wrote:I'm going a slightly different route by installing the 90mm xenon lights. Pat has the H9 lows and highs.
Comment: I really hope that you did not pay retail for a set of full blown D2S versions of those 90mm's.
jaydog5678 wrote:The stock lenses were completely sanded smooth on the inside and out.
Question: Why would you go through all the work of sanding the stock outer lenses when you are building a fiberglass front fascia with fully weatherproof units?

Difficult to comment at this point. Some pics as to the process involved to complete project would be invaluable. This would give us (me) a better idea as to whether we (I) have the skills and talent necessary to complete such an endeavour. Hopefully you chronicalled your project with some pics as you went along.
