some ppl install a self-tapping type brass nipple thru the silicone coupler beyond the MAF/VAF and connect the EGR vac solenoid hose there. THat approximates the connection point of the stock airbox for that hose.

Alright, will not having that hooked up throw a code?
(Thanks for the response...this is helping me out greatly.)

FYI, when I had mine hooked up and I did not have the hose plugged in I did not receive a code. Probably just in my case.

Yeah, I think I've ruled it out. I tapped a nipple into the back of my K&N cone and plugged in the vac line. Reset the ECU and took it for a spin. Everything was fine for the whole drive. Then was driving back after the test drive and just as I pulled into my work driveway, the CEL came on again.
I really need to find a way to read the code on a '96 GS. Anyone ever do this?

can't the 96 be taken to a place like autozone and they will check the codes for you?

Not likely. I swapped the '96 engine, tranny, suspension, engine wiring, ECU into my Protegé GT.
I need to get my hands on a shop manual or ask someone how they usually pull codes from a '96 GS. I have a few friends at dealerships, so it won't be a problem.
