well i guess it al depends on your aplication ;the racers go 15 for lightness and because the choice of race rubber in 16s is not as good. Street users go 15 for similar and different reasons including that they can get a lighter (and therefore better riding) package for less money in the 15s and they have lots of affordable choices in good street tires that fit in the 15 size (just about every performance tire comes in 205/50/15 and/or 195/50/15

I ride on 17's with 215/40s and I don't notice any degredation in ride quality. I think the rough ride comes more from crappy stock struts. Every since I lowered the car the ride's been rough.

I'm rolling on 205/40/17, with the car lowered.
The ride is awful, very uncomfortable...and I wouldn't change it for the world!

It's all for looks, some for handing...but honestly I couldn't go back. It'd be like riding on marshmellows...albeit black ones? hehe

Vaughn Nishimura used to run 225/45R-16's before putting 17's on his MX-3, and he never said anything about any rubbing, even with the lowered suspension. Wheel width and offset would likely be critical though - I know he was running MOMO Arrow 16" wheels, which I believe were 7" wide and had a 35mm offset, but don't quote me on that.

They looked awesome, by the way. In my opinion, they were just the right size - they looked like the wheels and tires the car was designed for.
