Ahhh, thanks for the information.

That clears up a few things.

So the BP motors are from Japan or wherever... so what's the difference between the GTX and GTR then?

:D bp just refers to the 1.8 motor. some call it the bpd, though i've only seen ONE website call it this, so i believe it's incorrect. regardless, the n/a(naturally aspirated/no turbo) bp motors can be found in a few cars in n. america. the gtx and gt-r BPT motors are only overseas.

there's a few topics describing the difference of the two, but to briefly sum it up...the gt-r has a web-stiffened block, better intake and exhaust manifolds, better turbo(ball-bearing) better valvetrain, etc.

you can take a bp motor, and get a custom manifold along with whatever turbo you want, swap in the bpt(either model) cams, gt-r intake manifold, and be much better off as the n/a bp motor has a much better flowing head. if you just want something already put together, i wouldn't spend the extra $1000 on getting the gt-r, just get the gtx and go from there.

Dude, you are the man!... with all the right info!!!

Thanks once again... that was the perfect answer.

I'm an engine machinist, and I'm going to rebuild a motor myself and throw it in... I'm not looking to spend money for someone else to do it. Plus I'll like doing this so when it breaks down I'll have more of an idea of what is wrong since I am the idiot who put it together.

You have been a ton of info, and thanks again.

Now time to hunt down an engine... Muhahaha! :D

Is there anyone who sells JDM BPs? I havent had much luck finding an engine aroud here with decent miles on it. I have looked and cant seem to find any. Emailed corksport to see if they can get them and havent heard yet, been a while so I have basically given up on hearing back from them. :(

Perry, would it be possable to swap the gauge cluster from any 92-93 in to the 94+ to have a functional speedometer? If this is possable, do you know of any other parts needed for this fix? ...for instance the speedometer gear

I am not sure how Justin did his-- but I think he just swapped the gear out or something.

Justin put a BPT into his 94.

You may want to ask him to be sure: jaydog5678@aol.com

i believe the v6 mx6 uses an electronic sensor that can be used with the mx3. you cannot use the 4cyl sensor in the g-series tranny because the sensor is too long.

I have seen two different DOHC BP engine styles in the 91-94 proteges. One looks similar to the BPT GT-X/R found only in Japan. The other looks similar to the B6 engine found in 94+ MX-3 RS's. How do these two engines compare? (HP, TQ, misc performance, ease of instalation) Which one would be a better candidate to swap in to the MX-3 and why?

:2thumbsup:

the 2nd pic is a bp from a 95+ protege
when i was doing my engine swap the sent me that engine and there was no way the 90-94 wirring harness was gonna work with it

i don't know if any one with 94+ mx-3 have tried this but get the 2nd gen protege engine(95+) and the ecu from the car to and just drop it in and plug in the ecu, i don't know if it would work but i don't see way it wouldn''t

Thanks marlon! ...was looking at your cardomain "Well the J-spec engine is installed and is it ever faster, the stock engine was 88hp and this one is 140, dosn't sound like much but it's ment to be turboed and will have around 280 hp soon" ....what car did your new BP engine origionally come from? Is it the same engine that is in the 91-94 protege LX's?

Also, I think the top engine pic in my previous post is a BPD engine found in 91-94 proteges. The bottom pic is of a BPZE engine found in 95-99 proteges. But does anyone know which one would be better or easier to swap in to a 94+ MX-3 RS?

im gonna get crap for this question, but asking it anyways... the 91-95 escort gts, were they issued as automatics as well? im considering about an engine swap with my 93 rs atx, just to keep mileage down on her, and figured id throw a lil bit of meat under the hood. im assuming itd be a bolt in... with the usual hook ups.. ecu and the such

*note i will not be doing the rx7 hatch conversion, id rather get a BP*
