Post by Franko »

Someone dared say that to me today and I almost killed him for it. They are completely different!! OHHHHH it made me so angry.. and the dude who said it drives a f 150 pickup.. like the old kind with shaved doorhandels and just flat black paint for a paintjob, and his crash test dummy of a friend drives a dodge shadow or something of that calibar with 3 spoke wheels.. and he thinks that pile or manure is as fast as a v6 mx.. he can drop dead!

ANGER!!

Yeah some ********** said my car was a ford at our local saturday car meeting point (all cars meet). I broke his nose and kicked his head into his car door and left a nice blood stain. I get really pissed off when people think ford is mazda. He said it to piss me off and made everyone laugh at me. This ford driver really did: drof (ford backwards) Driver Returns On Foot!!!

Ford does NOT own mazda. They have a 33% (i think) shared interest or something in Mazda. It is good for both companys. If somoene could point out that link with all the car companies and who they are linked to and the share percents that would be awesome. Its in these forums somewhere. I think barry knows the link.

all car companies have ties to others...

look at the 2002 civic, put that beside a ford focus and behold..... the same car with different badges both are fords though honda just stuck their engine in it. The Toyota Matrix... Pontiac Vibe even when you order body parts for them they have the same part number. I dont mind anyone calling my car a ford because usually the people doing it are driving a car that I can make those kind of similarities

oo a brampton boy.
if car companies didnt have ties with each other then there would be no competition so they share there ideas and create the market that way costs are lessened and prices cars can be sold at are more accessible to the average person.

The ford escort GT is a mazda 323 , and the Ford Probe is a Mazda MX-6.

Both those cars are 100% mazda made in japan.
The MX-6 and Probe were built in Flat Rock, Michigan, at a joint Mazda/Ford assembly plant.

The Ford Escort was built in two different plants, one in Michigan and one in Hermosillo, Mexico.

There was an interesting Ford/Mazda history lesson on another sight from a while back, if'ns your interested, read on....
Ford and Mazda first hooked up back in the 1970s, when Ford was looking to get a stake in the compact pickup market. See, GM had borrowed Isuzu's small truck in 1971. They slapped a Chevy badge on it, called it the LUV, and managed to seriously challenge Toyota's and Nissan's dominance in the field.

Ford, likewise, wanted a piece of the action, so they "pulled a LUV" on the Mazda B-series pickup in 1972, putting on Ford nameplates and calling it the Courier (a classic Ford truck name from the 1950s, but that's another story). It sold quite well throughout the 1970s, getting a redesign along with its Mazda counterpart for 1977.

But the Ford/Mazda connection grew stronger after 1975, thanks mainly to Mazda's over-reliance on (then) gas-guzzling rotary powerplants in the American market. When the gas crisis hit in 1974, Mazda saw its sales take a massive nosedive, and Ford saw an opportunity to get its very own Asian manufacturing partner. Thus, they bought a minority stake in Mazda while the price was good. Mazda, of course, would rebound during the 1980s with cars like the RX-7 and new front-drive 626 and GLC/323 models.

Ford didn't really capitalize on its Japanese connections very much during the 1980s, though, apart from continuing to build the Courier pickup until 1983 (when the American-designed Ranger arrived) and buying some Mazda-built diesel engines for use in the Escort and Tempo.

However, the company had started to become concerned over the falling sales of the Mustang during this period. After an ill-conceived stab at making the 'Stang a "Euro-style" sports car with the turbocharged SVO edition, Ford decided to try a new tack. Noting that Mazda's 626 platform was fairly versatile and capable of good performance (thanks to the turbo 2.0-liter four installed in Touring and GT models), Ford inquired about maybe borrowing that platform to create a totally new take on the Mustang. Mazda, in return, asked if they might be able to share a plant with Ford in order to build both the new car and a Mazda variant. Ford agreed, and the AutoAlliance plant in Flat Rock, Michigan was born.

In the interim, Ford rebadged and restyled a couple of Mazda's small cars. For 1988, they gave the 323 a set of new body styles and called it the Mercury Tracer - then took the Japanese-market 121 (actually built in Korea by Kia Motors) and put a Ford oval on it to call it the Festiva.

AutoAlliance finally started out in 1987 building just the 626. Shortly thereafter came a new MX-6 coupe version, basically a revision of the previous 626 two-door. But then early in 1988 came Ford's Probe, based on the MX-6 but with totally different Euro-inspired styling and a hatchback body. Originally, the Probe had been intended to replace the old Mustang entirely, but then Mustang sales picked up again - and surprisingly, the Probe stayed popular too. Thus, Ford began working on a replacement for the Mustang while continuing to develop the Probe.

Meanwhile, Mazda was looking to gain an even stronger foothold in the American market. Noting the growing fascination with trucks and sport-utility vehicles in the USA, they purchased a few thousand two-door Explorers from Ford, placed Mazda badges on them, and called them Navajos from 1991-1994. And to make their truck line even more competitive, by 1994 they phased out the old Japanese-built B-series pickups in favor of a new line based on the Ford Ranger. (Note that ironically, it was Mazda's pickups which originally inspired Ford to build the Ranger - and then the pupil became the teacher, or something like that.)

And likewise, Ford borrowed the Protege platform and the DOHC 1.8-liter engine to build a new bunch of Ford Escorts and Mercury Tracers from 1991 on. Though this method was discontinued when the Focus arrived during 1999, rumors say that Ford may be planning to use a Mazda platform again for the Focus' replacement.

So apart from the B-series/Ranger tie-up, Ford's involvement with Mazda has been somewhat less obvious in the past five years or so. Mazda, of course, is now buying Duratec V6 engines from Ford for the MPV and Mazda6, as well as sharing in production and design of the Escape/Tribute SUV. But Ford has managed to leave Mazda alone, despite having bumped up their share in the company during the 1990s.

Which is good, because otherwise new cars like the 6 and the RX-8 might have had a lot more "Ford-ness" and a lot less Mazda in them.

(I realize that was a huge post, but I felt compelled to clear up the history concerning Ford and Mazda for those who might not know.)

You can tell where any car was built by the first digit of the VIN... 1 or 4 is USA, 2 is Canada, 3 is Mexico, J is Japan, etc etc etc....
