Post by vtmx3 »

where can I get a air intake "short ram" for my dohc? Do they even make them? Or I've seen some cars on the domain with custom ones off of other cars must be? If so what cars are they geting it from?

Any help would be appreciated

first off it wont do anything performance wise for your car. except use more fuel if thats called better performance, a CAI may do something however it will be marginal gains at best. however it does look a lot nicer then the stock air box. a better filter say a K and N may yeild the same results as a CAI.

short ram does improve hp... i installed one on mine a few months ago and did notice a gain... plus you don't run the risk of sucking up water and destroying your engine... also ifyou get really ambitious you can put a hood scoop infront of the ram air intake and get safer and better cold air that way with few bends in the intake also gaining more hp than a conventional cold air intake or you can do what i'm doing and make custom projectors with a special intake hole integrated into the lights themselves.

honestly i dont want to sound like a jerk or anything but you wouldnt have gotten any gains. maybe a little louder sound but thats about it. as for the hood scope it may look cool but it wont really give you that much cooling capacity. and as for adding more hp to the intake setup, i dont think so.
yes i know in many cases this will help aka when my friend removes his head light at the track and runs his Intake there, of course he has a h22 turbo civic coup that runs 12.4s.
our cars dont make enough hp to notice any gains be freeing up the intake system.
Mazda did a good job with the stock setup.

if anyone has dyno stuff to prove me wrong thats awesome.

to avoid sucking up water, use a bypass valve on the intake to stop water from entering the engine.

added a CAI to my miata would only add like 2 hp at the most, not enough for any difference.

2 HP, if that. I bought a CAI from one of the vendors on eBay. Yeah it was okay, but the fit was pretty poor.

I eventually removed the lower tube and attached the cone filter directly on the MAF. I can not tell any difference from the two (Cold/Hot).

Looks cool tho.

Casino, there have been Gains shown on Protege Enignes from cold air swaps. But the only one i could find was with the RX-7 MAF too. So that is a different factor from just stock box to CAI with the RX-7 Maf.... I know it gained 6.8~7hp up high. THat is 2 higher then with the stock airbox from which he got like 4.7~5hp. So it does help in some cases but when you have to pay that much and you waste as much gas as you do i do not think it was worth it for my MX-3 Engine. THe BP is another thought thou.

thats a big jump 6-7 hp just from simple mods.

if you changed to a better header, and a more free flowing exhaust you may be able to get those gains eve with the MAF.

bolt ons dont add that much hp.

IMO the only way to get power from our engines is from forced induction of some kind.
with alll my mods on my old mx-3 i could not break into the 15's. and beleive me i had every bolt on there is lol, plus a 55 shot of nitrous oxide.

what about those "high velocity" intake pipe, which has 3" ends and is enlarged to 5" in middle, anyone heard of them, any improvement with them?
