BP Swap progress...

Post by Shady469 »

well, this being the 4th time I've put a motor in the MX-3 it went fairly easy. I didn't realize though that it is alot bigger than even the B6T. There's almost no room between the belts and the frame. The BP was also alot less forgiving when i was trying to get the cross member bolted up. I had to put a jack under the exhaust manifold and jack it up to tilt the motor back. The shift linkage isn't is the best of shape: the stupid SRD bushings were so tight around the bolt in the tranny i had to beat it out and in the process ripped the rubber part up by the shifter(don't ask).
The motor is in pretty good shape: out of an EGT with ~76k miles. Took off the valve cover and everything seemed pretty golden. The crank turns pretty easily and i was happy to find bosch platinum plugs in it, i.e. i think the previous owner took care of it. I still need a few pieces before i can get her running but it shouldn't be too long.
Also, after checking the motor over the two bolts in the block on the front: they look alot like the ones on the B6T. Is the one closest to the tranny for an oil line and the other coolant? It looks like this motor was made to be boosted. It's tempting...
I will try to post some pictures tomorrow

well she's finally running after two days of belt/exhaust/timing issues (Thanks again Jeremy). Sounds mean as hell open header. i still need to clean up a few things but she should be good to go. it's throwing two codes: one for the purge control valve and the coolant sensor. i know i'll be glad once the mx-3 is back on the road...

You are doing better than I. My garage looks like a freakin war zone. I couldn't get the 32mm shaft nuts off of the ends of the axels (blew up a rachet trying), so we took the whole front suspension out to get the half axles out of the tranny. Got the old engine out though. I'm going to be busy tomorrow and Thursday, so Friday I'll be finishing all the misc. stuff and Saturday the BP goes in...

it's been raining here and unfortunately my garage is my driveway so that has sucked, but when there is a break in the weather i will post some pics.

UPDATE: Oh MY!!! this motor is a beast! i think i may be a convert to all-motor set-ups. before i go on with the story let me say that i still am running a big exhaust from the b6t(no cat, 2.5" all the way back to an arospeed bomb muffler). ne way, I took the car out last night
for a test drive and it didn't have a whole lot of low end i was pretty sure b/c of lack of backpressure. but i laid into it a little and wouldnt you know it the tires broke loose around 5k. i only took it up to 6k but man does it pull smooth. so i parked it for the night and checked everything over. this morning i put the silencer in and took it around the block and just taking off normally from a stop the tires started to let go. I am very impressed.
i still need to get the timing/idle right. i reset the ecu and the purge control valve code went away but the coolant one is still there. i don't understand because the fans cut on and it doesn't look like its getting hot? i guess i just need to replace it.
so in closing: i love this swap already. it drives very easy and i think it has alot of potential.
The mods on this motor:
94 EGT motor
92 pro lx tranny
BP10 ECU
Spec 10.5 lb flywheel
ACT 6-pad disk w/ heavy duty pp
2.5" exhaust
Jacobs electronics ICE Pak
Nology wires
Apex'i S-AFC2
"tuned" RX-7 MAF
B&M short shifter
Ground kit

PS. i kept the black box in the intake tract because the protege forums said you lose a dyno proven 4-5 lb/ft tq by taking it off. can anyone verify this?

one thing if someone could clarify for me:
MSN rates the pro lx motor at 125hp and 125tq w/ 10.0:1 compression while they say the EGT motor puts out 127hp and 114tq w/ 9.0:1 compression. i though they were the same motor. i know they have different ECU's but thought internally they were the same?

im looking into doing this swap as well but im gonna keep my b6 tranny since i already bought a heavy duty clutch and 4 puck disk for it awhile back. what would be the difference betwene usin a bp ecu and a b6 ecu, both motors (mine is a dohc 1.6) have a vics system, so would i be at a dis-adcvantage using the b6 ecu?

hey i sent u an email but i didn't know you have a 94+ mx-3
u can try getting a 95+ protege engine and ecu cause that might work with your wirring harness

yea see i think people are getting annoyed with me asking these question but the only reason why i keep tryin to get answers is because everyone who has done swaps like this has a 92-93 mx usually sohc. i have a 94+ dohc...but if i use a pro ecu or escort ecu, how would i go wiring it up? alos do all the acessories, like a/c p/s and water pumps and stuff would they fit from my b6 motor or would i need ot get an bp a/c, p/s..?

Just keep at it. My garage is still a freakin war zone, but the car is running and I have over 600 miles on it. I still need to tune the VAF and whatnot, but I have cleared all the engine codes.
