No charged? Battery problem?

Hi, I have incounter battery problems. This is the situation, try jump starting the car but when i clip the negative jump lead into the negative terminal of the battery the "battery charged icon" on the dash did not light up and the engine won't even click over but when i clip the negative jump lead onto a metal part of the engine bay the icon lights up and when i turn the key it's all good. Anyone knows why?
