exhaust prob. help.

Post by Ryencool »

HEy guys havent posted here in years after my move to texas from ny, but im having a prob. I know what it is just need a price estimate. A few months ago my cousins welded tip ( he bought it that way ) fell off goin about 70mph and hit the underside of my car as I ran over it. Now im haveing exhaust probs and pretty much knew what it was heres a pic

So I think it hit right before that cat and my car has slowly gotten loder I think the pipe finally came off yesterday so its loud as **** and im getting a check engine light too. So how much should this be to fix? and can it cause damage if I dont fix it right away?

thanks guys

the check engine light might be an o2 sensor being messed up..........

I would just replace the whole cat.....reason to upgrade....
its probally gonna be about 100 bucks with labor to fix the exhaust section

yea i don't think the exhaust has anything to do with your CEL. i've ran my car with no exhaust before (just header) and i didn't get a CEL.

Looking at your picture you have lost the flex joint before the cat. There is no point to trying to repair this pipe by welding in a new flex joint. If the rust so bad that the pipe broke on both sides of the flex for it to fall out then the rest of the pipe is going turn to dust soon also. Depending on which engine you have, the cost of a replacement front pipe could be about $50 from Walker or Bosal for the SOHC. Unfortunately the pipe for the DOHC and V-6 are the same price from the Bosal or the dealer. Also the Bosal pipe for both engines are not stocked in Bosal warehouses on a regular basis. The last time I checked the price for the front pipe for a V-6 it was between $300-$400. As for the CEL the O2 was probably shot already and the the sudden change in pressure, temp, etc was enough to finish it off.

Something else I just noticed looking at the picture again. You seem to have a lot of carbon that was blasted out of the pipe. Look at the flange going to the Cat. Normally you shouldn't see that much carbon is the engine was operating under normal operation parameters. I'm guessing the the flex didn't fall off but was blown off due to the carbon becoming super heated before the cat and under the right conditions and over pressure condition was created and the weakest point failed blowing off the flex.

dont think it was a blowout like a highpressure condition as stated in the last post. I did liek I mentioned in my firstpost run over someone exhaust tip the was rolling down the highway and bouncing at like 70mph. Hit the underside of my car upfront right where that pipe was. I remember now wanting to hit the tip with my wheels so went over it right down the middle. I dont think it was the flex pip, I thought that was further up? so I can jsut get another flex pipe installed?
