95 DOHC upgrade options/ Please help me decide

Post by barbarino »

Hey guys, whats going on. Ive been browsing all the forum threads and car domain sites looking for options for my 95 1.6L DOHC. I know later on down the road Im gonna end up swapping the engine. But which engine would be the best bargain for my buck? I found a few at corksport:

1.6L T4cyl (B6T)
1.8L T4cyl (BPturbo)(from GTR)
2.5L V6 (KL-ZE) w/approx 197 HP

Now I know most of these engines require new mounts, tranny's, wiring harness and ecu's. Thats not a problem. Money is of no issue to me, it may take a while, but I want to hook this car up. Not many people in south florida have a mx-3 or even seen an mx-3. Thats the main reason I got the car, sick of the same ole civics at car shows I want to build something different. I dont know much about modding engines though, so I need some help o-n deciding which engine to look for to swap in.

Also, my current 1.6 DOHC has about 62,000 miles on it so I figured while Im saving the cash for the new engine I might as well have some fun with the one I have now. I was unable to find an intake until I found the PRM Pro Kit Intake at corksport. Have any of you gotten this intake? Is it directly bolt on or would it have to be modded? Is there anything else I can do to this engine to increase my HP? I know alot of questions that may seem like you guys answer every day, I just dont wanna spend money on something that isnt worth it.

One more thing, Ive only been able to find exhaust systems for the 92-93 mx-3, will these fit the 95? If so, any modding need to be done?

Thanks for the help.

the 1.8 BPTurbo is the most bang for your buck since you have a 4 cyl. the 2.5 is a pain to put in because the mounts are all different, turbos are fun anyways. i have the PRM intake on my DOHC, it went on just fine...don't have to mod anything.

if you swap i'd say the bpt 1.8 ... it is a lot of work especially when you swapping out the 1.6 dohc... if you keep your engine you can use internals from the miata 1.6 and build your engine up then turbo it or use nitrous

Be aware - there are some wiring issues with going from a 1995 engine to an older one. I learned this the hard way when I began looking into a swap from a 1993 1.6 SOHC to a 1995 1.6 DOHC. You might have tranny compatibility issues too. There are other options besides a swap. You might want to look into building up that 1.6 DOHC. I think there are turbo kits for the 90 -94 Miata that will work with it. Do not take my word for it though. I am just saying that you should do your homework before you start spending money. I have had to change my plans several times and every time I wasted $$.

thanks for all the feedback, this is why this forum is the best Ive been to. I was also thinking the BPTurbo would be the best. That sucks about the wiring problems. I need to find a local shop that I can go to to find out more info. Also, the issue i was concerned about with the exhaust is that it shows it is for 92-93 mx3's i have a 95 any issues with that?

You said I should build it up, sorry if I sound stupid here, but what exactly do you mean. This is what I am thinking about:

Intake
Brullen Cat Back Exhaust
ECU Upgrade

Any other ideas? I have spent about 2 months searching these forums and searching the web, I have found many websites, but still have Q's. What would I need to turbo my DOHC? Thanks guys, you are the best. If any of you have computer issues, let me know, I am tech support.
