Fluctuating Idle?

Post by projectmx »

Pretty much since i bought the car a few months ago i have a strange intermittent idle issue. Sometimes when i put the car in nuetral and come to a stop at a light or sign my idle will fluctuate between 800ish to about 2000 and after about 30 seconds it stops and stays at around 1100 or a little under. I did a search and found very little on this particular problem except one person was told something about a timing problem with giong from high to low rpms? does anyone else have any information on this problem?

It's your idle air controller. It's located on/near the thottle body. Its main function is to let enough air into the engine when the throttle body plate is shut. For some reason it gets gunked up, prolly by the oil vapor coming in from the valve cover.

New one costs $225 or so from autozone. Easy fix is buy some 3M throttle body cleaner from NAPA and take the IAC out. Its something like 4-6 bolts and two thin coolent lines. Spray it till no more black stuff comes out.

Also if you messed with your idle speed screw or anything else you will need to reset it.
