engine rough after high rpms

Post by FlyingMXer »

Okay here is the deal, I have a 92 SOHC with about 97,500 miles on it. I just did an oil change, plugs and wires, air filter, and injector cleaner last weekend. Yesterday I was getting on to the highway and decided to give er the gun. I hit around 5,500 in first and about 5k in each second and third. Unfortunately I cought up with the person in front of me sooner than I expected and had to let off. When I disengaged the clutch I felt the engine running real rough like it was missing or detonating. :( I pulled over and tapped the gas and it went right back to normal, haven't had a problem with it since.... The real question now, what did I f*** up? Or is this just something that happens after coming off of high rpm like that (never happened before, but I pushed it a little harder than I normaly do). Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks

Yes its a problem and no its not normal. AS for what it is intermitant problems are hard to trace down but i would suggest checking out what you have changed recently first

Ok not sure I can help but my mx started doing the same thing...After high revs or highway driving when slowing down the idle would drop and try to stall..It wouldn't happen very often so I put up with it for a while untill it started doing it in first, second and third gear. I found the problem to be the MAF..So I replaced it and it went away...FOR A WHILE...Then it started again. I realized after the MAF was getting dirty and I belive sticking...So I clean it out with some carb cleaner and since I had the whole intake off I cleaned the TB also...Havn't had a problem since and it's been about 6-7 mts now...I hope that helps...

I went back and rechecked the plugs and wires, didn't find anything there though. I cleaned out the MAF about 3 months ago, and tried to get to the IAT but couldn't get the screws on the throttle body to loosen upa nd I didn't want to strip them out so I gave it up. My car normally does the drop in RPMs after coming down like you described, but this was different. Is there any certain 'feel' to an engine that is detonating? It just felt like it was only hitting some of the cyliders, possibly timing, I'm reaching here. I haven't had any problems since, I just don't want to end up on the side of the road somewhere later on :(

I have noticed the same problem. It "ONLY" happens after i romp on it. SO to solve the problem DON'T! Its easy. But the problem is yes the timeing is thrown off a little. For some reason it take a sec for the ecu to get the timing back from High revs to Low revs. I don't really know all about it except thats what my brother aka my mech. told me.
