Wierd noise coming from motor

Post by SpaceWiz »

Hiya, since yesterday afternoon im having a problem with some wierd noise coming from my motor.

It sounds like something is vibrating but it's very loud.
And this comes mostly when my rpm is between 3000-4000, below and above that there is no such noise.

Any ideas what this can be? I checked the motoroil and such.. but everything seemed fine by me.
But the wierd part is that yesterday morning it was working fine, then in the afternoon when i was gonna go home from work it made that noise :(

Edit: There is no other problems, the car runs smoothly even if it makes that noise.

Another little update.. now that i know the english word for the faulty part ;)

It's the main bearings that's gone bad, and from a little looking around these should be replaceable without changing the whole engine wich is a good thing for me!
Anyways, is this a hard procedure?

you gotta pull the motor...and do some work. we are currently doing it to an avenger. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE NO OIL LEAKS WHEN IT PUT BACK TOGETHER. some how he had one and he spun a bearing, and we now have to rip his new engine apart so.
i got a 90 pgt...but wish it was a mx-3 bp-t!

Yeah i was counting on that i had to pull the engine out and do some work on it.. as long as i dont have to replace it, because i have no money left right now so i have to get together what money i can to just fix this engine..
In the future when i have some money stored up i think im gonna look for an KL-ZE.

Before you pull the motor, does the noice sound kind of like 2 metal peices rubbing togheter, and a slight rettling. Cause my car made the same type of noice this summer for about a week before i figured out what it was. It sounded like it came from the engine bay and would only sound at about 3300-3500 rpm. The problem was where the 'cat' is there is a metal peice that goes out along the exhaust pipe, there should be a clamp holding it to the pipe, but my sliped off and when the engine would hit the specific frequency that metal thing would vibrate against the pipe and make that noice. So i just clamped it really tight and it went away.

Check yours because it sounmds just like the problem i had.

Just wanted a little more info on this to make sure that it's actually the main bearings that are the problem.
Before i only had this noise coming when i was accelerating, but now it's whenever i turn on the engine, i havent used the car for a few days but i went out to check something today to try and actually locate the sound..

Imagine hitting something solid led or other hard metal with a hammer, this is how it sounds and it's basically 1 hit per second.
So.. do you think it's the main bearings or is it something else? :/

Yeah that sounds like you spun a bearing, i wouldn't run it much at all, because of the risk of throwing a rod. It's most likely a main bearing, but could possibly a rod bearing. Either way it requires to take the engine out, and most likely you'll have to have the crank turned by a machine shop. If you do all the work you're self, you could get away with under $500 in parts, and cost of gettting the crank machined. -Joe

Before you touch anything on the engine, you might want to do what he said. Mine had the same noise too after a week of buying the car. It did really sounded like it was coming from the engine but after 3 days of hunting where that sound was comming from, I found out that it was the catalytic converter heatshield. The heatshield on mine got rusted and causing it to shake when reving or anything that causes it to vibrate. Incase that that is your problem and you have to remove the shield permanently(like what i did), make sure you remove all the shield. Because when i removed mine i just removed the bottom half where i didn't know that I left half of it on top of cat and that caused me another 2 days of suspecting that that sound was comming from engine. So yeah make sure you do this first before doing something else.
