With that amount, search around your area for engines. You might be able to swing a swap if you spend right, even if you have to add some cash.
Otherwise, you can go headers (marcor-genie.com), exhuast (just go custom stainless, but price it out), or intake (I think Ractive make a cold air).
Just beware of 'cheap' power, because it'll end up costing you sooner or later.

With the money you have pound for pound excluding saving money.

Yes a swap is within that price range BUT you will have to do all the work yourself

I would suggest port matching the header and putting in a strait 2.25-.5 exsaust with no emmsions and maybe a muffler with a good flowing intake. Then a wet 100 shot. Oh and a rx7 MAF. I suggest being sure you run really high octane too.. but yeah that is my suggestion =] maybe a 125 shot.. just depends on you.

edit: oh and it takes most hondas a lot more 1000$ to run in the 14s ;)

100-125 shot on a sohc 4cyl? I dont think thats a smart idea unless you do #1 an engine swap, #2 a couple thousand $$ worth upgrades on the original engine.
Id say swap in a BP (if your budget allows it). Add things to this engine, exhaust, intake etc and eventually if you have the cash somewhere down the road do a turbo setup.
Another good option you have is the new Turbokit for the sohc.

A shot that big has been done before on a sohc and it took the abuse well. There was a huge argument thread on it a while ago.. While being over a year.

Just dont underestimate strong internals with good tuneing.

key word, GOOD TUNING=MONEY!!!!!!!

save ur money, go out and start buying parts to do a swap pending what you want to do.

if you just want a solid 200 ponies under ur hood, get a bpt-gtx engine, ecu and harness. pro lx transmission to be safe and ensure a good hold so you dont blow yours, and then slowly upgrad parts on the engine.

or, turbo your exhisting engine. buy a turbo, wastegay, bov, fpr, injectors, guages, and a custom exhaust mani and down pipe. or like others said save and get the racing mazda turbo kit. stock can handle 15psi with good tuning so 7psi would be very sutable. either way you look at it, you have choices
i got a 90 pgt...but wish it was a mx-3 bp-t!

I don't want to sound like a someones Dad or anything, but if you've got cash set aside for school, spend it on school...
I took student loans for a couple years, now I'm paying for it big time and it'll end up costing me an extra 5 grand.
That would've bought a nice swap...
Besides, an education will likely land you in a better paying career which will afford more money down the road.
So REALLY think about where you want to spend, what your goal is, spend your money, and don't ask 'What if' later on....
