engine swap: specific questions

Post by DJGypsy »

before reading this, please understand that i have already searched and read about this topic, and i am looking for more specific answers for my particular case.

i'm planning on doing up an eninge swap soon, cause i'm sick of the issues i'm having with my B6ZE. i'm looking to swap in the 1.8L DOHC BP05 motor from a 94 Protege LX (non turbo), or 94-97 miata. random fact: this same engine was used in the '98 kia sephia because of a labor strike. ANYWAYS....i just wanna double check...for this engine swap, i need:

engine
ECU
Wiring Harness

i have heard that my stock tranny WILL bolt up. is this true? will my stock CV axels fit if i have to go with the Protege LX tranny? WILL MY EXISTING AIR CONDITIONER FIT?...and one more thing...if anyone has a recommendation as to where i can get this engine for a reasonable price, please tell me!!!

thanks guys.
P.S. MARLON! i'd love to have your input :D

Yeah Marlon is the man to talk to. Your tranny will bolt up and work fine. I dont think the miata engine will work will it? Go with a protege LX engine from 90-94. If you use your stock tranny I would guess your stock axels will work. But anyway, yeah get the ECU and harness as well.

PS - Marlon let me know about the mx-3 harness :)

yes the stock tranny will work
you will need to use the pro lx axels if you use pro lx tranny
and if you use the pro lx tranny you need to use the mounting bracket for the motor mount under the battery off a pro lx

not sure if the ac will work but prob will then engines are soo alike

ohh and just put the pro lx tranny in now it
the stock tranny isn't the strongest and the stock clutch can't hold the bp(to much power :D )

if you wanna use the stock tranny altleast get a good clutch for it

good luck with the swap :welder:

Yeah the A/C will bolt up, just dont disconnect anything when you take the motor out. Unbolt the compressor and let it hang there untill you put the new motor in. While the 2 engines are out switch the 1.6 compressor bracket onto the 1.8, its much easyer to do this when the engines are out. When you lower the new motor in just bolt up the old compressor. I have my old A/C bolted up to the BPT and it still blows cold :) Hope all goes well... I might just stop by and see the progress :D

If you dont mind a beat one go to Copher bros. its a "you pull it" lot so bring tools. I wouldnt reccomend getting your motor there but for smaller parts its a good deal (can you say 39.95 for a tranny? I can :) ). Just take the bayside down to 118th(like 2 lights past Ulmerton) and bang a left. When you see "Magic auto wreckers" make another left and drive past magic to cophers. You could go you Magic but they are kinda expensive, I wouldn't unless your desprate. They charged me 250 for a egt tranny and jack shaft. For your motor just look online for it. BP's are cheap and common so tracking one down close by shouldnt be a problem. If I find my old list of sites I'll post them up for you.

The shipping is kinda far but I reccomend Mazda auto recycling go to links then "chassis and lugnuts cornner" to check out the sales. I got my axles there.
