Wow is this true?? Are you saying that if the camshafts stay where they are, there is no way the pistons can hit the valves?! This has truly settled my "do I/ Dont I" dilemma as I am loathed to spend £300 (4.5 hours labour?) on a belt replacement when im 90% sur one was done 10,000 miles ago

no it's the same thing with the V6.
If the cams stop moving the engine will just die.
hence the term non-interference engine. valve train will remain safe.

I think my belt snapped while driving does it just stall and then you can't start it. I mean it turns over and everything just nothing else. If this is due to the timing belt snapping can you tell me how much it cost you to fix it so i don;t get ripped. thnx
What else is gonna go wrong?

did your car just all the sudden die while driving? mine did that about half a year ago. alltogether it was fairly inexpensive, 45 usd and about half adays worth of work. and yes it is a great thing that the engine retards itsself like that orelse i would have deen tataly screwed. hope this helps.

Isn't there a top that can be removed to check the condition of the belt without going through the hastle of taking half the engine apart?

Pending motor its not always easy to do. You will also need REALLY good lighting to be able to see the condidtion of the belt.
