Help It died in San Antonio wont run at all.

Post by mazda20 »

Well just like the post says. I am running an MSD and external coil on a modified cap, but the cap does not seem to be the problem. This is what I have done so far.
...change cap and rotor
...checked for spark from MSD to external coil (good)
...checked for spark from coil to cap (good)
...no spark from cap to wires
...no spark from wires to plugs
...tried internal coil on new cap (no luck)
Any suggestions?

Sounds like the injectors aren't sending fuel.

...no spark from cap to wires
...no spark from wires to plugs
tell me how fuel affects this?
you've pulled all the plugs out and tried to crank it and none will fire? check to make sure all the connections are good(wire from coil to cap, all wires going to plugs), make sure the rotor button has good contact with the cap. check for continuity between the part where the plug wires connect to the cap and the points on the inside of the cap.

If I take out the plug will I be able to see a spark on it from the wire?
Also being that it is an MSD would it be possible that the chip (from radioshack 5094) could have gone bad after a few months?

pull the plugs out and keep them in the plug wire. lay them across the valve cover. have someone start the car and look to see if any of them fire. if you have power from the coil to the disty, the msd is working.

Thanks Again, thats what I thought about the MSD but I got so many wires spliced into to set it up that maybe with this Texas heat I had a problem. But the spark is good and strong from the MSD. I hope it is not anything serious. I will try that tomarrow.

Here is an update on this problem. I took the plugs out and all four get a moderate spark. When I pulled the plugs out cyl 1 had alot of burn residue on it but no uneven spark burn cyl 2 and 3 was a little better than cyl 1, but cyl 4 had alot of oil around the outside of the plug and on the inside of the plug.
Anyone know if this is a serious problem?
Now I know I am getting a small spark, but maybe it is not enough from the cap to the plugs to turn the car over?
I got fuel and I got spark what else could it be?

is your valve cover gasket leaking inside the spark plug wells? if so, fix it. how old are your plug wires?

Could be defective cap or rotor....

I got to get it running and drive it home about a 2 hour drive do you think it will be okay? What kind of damage am I doing if that gasket is bad right now?
