Re: gtr/gtx?
what are some of the reasons that make building the gtr a waste of money...
i got a 90 pgt...but wish it was a mx-3 bp-t!

Re: gtr/gtx?
I want to do the b6t swap. Would it be worth getting forged pistons rods and a better head gasket with a ball bearing turbo, boost control etc... Or would the bpt be around the same price with the same amount of hp. Which has better (cheaper) potential. Thanks

Re: gtr/gtx?
one, you'll save money from buying a bpt or n/a bp. if you upgrade the internals, head, valvetrain, turbo, you've lost most of the "advantages" of the gt-r plus it will be more potent than a stock gt-r motor. i've yet to see the bpt block be weaker than the web-stiffened block. dave l had over 500hp, there's an egt with a n/a bp block with an added turbo with 545hp.
if you're going to keep the motor relatively stock, then yeah, go for the gt-r. but if you're going to build up, you're better off getting the cheaper of two.
Fast imports only come on two wheels.

Re: gtr/gtx?
so you suggest gettin a gtx, upgrading the valvetrain, heads, turbo rods and what not and ill surpass the gt-r...
how much boost was dave running....and i see your arguments of the bp to turbo and gtx and build that. which i might just do. because number one, i went through turboing an engine and well, it was fun, id do it again but if i can stay away from it i would! we got the car running good to, ill try and get some video of it. to see the car go to my friends roy's site-go to pictures, then cars, then his avenger
but anyways...ashley, thanx for ur infon and you probablly saved me some money....cuz i know i can get the gtx motor for roughly 600 bucks so, if you would allow me to if i need help can i turn to ya!

Re: gtr/gtx?
The suggestion is to buy a BP from an Escort or a Protege and go from there. You can find them for $400 and up in good condition. Rods and pistons are another $1300. A good turbo is $600-2000, intercooler is $500+, fuel system is $300+, valvetrain is $200-2500, etc. So you see that by buying the cheaper motor you will actually save over $1000 and still come out way ahead of either BP engines found in the GTX and GTR.

Re: gtr/gtx?
hey i found a 1.8 GTX motor with AWD and i was just wondering if a FWD tranny would bolt right up to the block (protege/escort gt tranny). i'm guessing the block is the same and everything. any help would be appreciated.

Protege LX 1990-1994, Escort GT 1991-1996 will bolt right up to the 1.8 GTX.

Re: gtr/gtx?
i agree, if you're going to get a bigger turbo and custom manifold, along with rebuilding the motor itself, you're better off to get a n/a bp motor as you will already have a better head.

Re: gtr/gtx?
ok, a few more questions, can i use the clutch slave cylinder from my mx3 on the bpt? or do i need one off a bp motor? how about the pipe that connects the master cyl to the slave cyl???

Re: gtr/gtx?
the slave cyl is tranny specific, not motor specific. the tranny you get should come with one. you "should" be able to use the existing lines for your clutch hydraulic system.

Re: gtr/gtx?
pretty much for me the only saving ill be doing is the engine. the price to re-do the internals brings the cost back up because, correct me if i'm wrong, but the gtr can handle upwards of 20 psi stock. so i wont be doing any engine re working on the gtr unless i find it absolutly nessacary.
moral of all this would be-high hp cheaper=turbo a na bp engine and re-do internals
a quick 300hp and a lil above go for the gtr....its ur choice. do i have that summed up fairly well?
[ August 02, 2003: Message edited by: ltjrunner ]

Re: gtr/gtx?
they can all handle above 20psi. the stock gtx can handle upwards of 400hp with proper tuning. a little less psi for the n/a bp due to a higher CR, but still close to that hp.
