Silly question but.........

I know this is gonna make me sound like a complete moron, but how do i check my transmission fluid. I always assumed that it was by looking at a dipstick similar to the oil. But i was looking for it today and couldnt see anything. My car is a 95 4 cyl 5 speed, if it makes any difference. thanks.

hahaha first off you really don't need to look at the oil level since its a manual. but if you really want to then go for it. pull out your speedometer gear located on the back of the tranny, use the plastic gear as the "dip stick" if the oil is up to the top of the gear then it is fine, if it is in the middle of the gear then add untill full (top of gear) hope this helps. but since it's a manual tranny you don't really need to check the level

thanks a bunch. the reason i was asking was because ive been noticing that i hear and feel a small clunk or grind everytime i go into second gear. someone mentioned that i should check my fluid.

A grinding/clunking second gear shift can also point to a clutch thats not releasing completely. But if your clutch is newer or you know for a fact thats not the problem,and your 1-2 shift grinding gets bad to the point where you consider rebuilding, there is an old trick to try first. (If you do this, your are doing it at YOUR OWN RISK, if it screws something up, dont blame me!)Get yourself about 2-3 oz. of powdered graphite (hardware stores, locksmiths, etc should have it). Mix the powder into about 3-4 oz. of tranny oil, stir it up, and add this goopy mix into your tranny (you can just add the powder directly in the tranny if you can do it without loosing most of it or making a huge mess...) After about 50-100 miles of regular driving your problem may be cured. I have done this in 3 of my own Rx7's and it worked like a charm, long term. (The early 1st and 2nd generation Rx7's were notorious for a grinding 1-2 shift). Maybe someone else has heard of this and wants to chime in to say "yea it works" or "done listen to this idiot" but like I said I did this on 3 different Rx's and it worked great......

Whats funny is I had an auto in my car, & it took me about 2 months to find the damn dip stick! They hide it by the battery & it's all black, flippin geniuses,...

When you check you tranny fluid, do your self a favor and get some rubber gloves. The kind doctors wear. Most auto shops sell them these days.<p>No joke either, The oil can smell like A$$. Really!!! Plus it sinks into your skin and stays around for a couple days.

Dude, when you say you dont need to check your tranny fluid, thats not true. In my SOHC, the fluid was low from when i first bought it a year ago. It just wasnt shifting right, grinding and just being stubborn when shifting gears...i drained the old oil(which was way low), and added new oil. Shifts like a new car..

ya they hide the tranny fluid thing way down in the back lol hard to get at especially since it takes forever for my engine to cool down and many is the time i have burned my arm reaching for it lol im dumb but what can u do
