Making a 1993 MX3 from ODB1 to ODB2

Post by jap »

What would it take to turn an ODB1 MX3 into an ODB2 car? I have both ECUs wiring diagrams. The point of me doing this is to be able to use the 94 and up mass sensor.
1. What else would it take to make this possible besides just changing to the 94 ECU?
2. Will I have to change the distributor and the injectors too?
3. Should I just rob all the sensors from the 94 and up engine?

one thing flat out i know is you will have a o2 sensor after the cat. That is one big thing. It allows it to see if the cat is dead or going that way.

Not only that but you will also have to change out your throttle sensor. The SOHC mx-3 uses a 2 postion sensor, the DOHC uses a potentiometer style throttle sensor. There may be more than just these mods. Its kind of one of those things you just have to figure out along the way.

I never heard of it done on a mx3 but its been done on honda's. I think they swap the distributor, injectors, and the ecu. I only reason i wanted to swap to ODB2 was to be able to use their'll mass sensor.

NO Mx-3 in the U.S was ever an OBD-II car. They were ALL OBD-I. Why would you want to do this anyway?
[ March 28, 2003: Message edited by: jaydog5678 ]

What are you talking about? Isn't 94 and up mx3's OBD2, thats why they have a different mass sensor?

OBDII became available in vehicles in 1996.
Why would anyone want to put more sensors in a vehicle?? Too much work involved.
On Hondas they take out the OBDII ECU's and replace them with OBDI ECU's with special wiring harness. Never vise versa.

Ok, Let me get this right. The 1992-93 Sohc mx3's are ODB-0 and the 1994-96 mx3's are ODB-1. Right or wrong? Well, if that's the case I have a 1993 Sohc mx3. I want to be able to use the 1994 mx3 mass sensor so I'm trying to see what it takes to make my car ODB1. Is just using the 1994 ecu and changing around the wiring harness all it will take?

You would want to keep your OBD-1 ECU. It allows your car to be modified a lot easier. Honda people who have OBD-2 ECUs want to convert to OBD-1 because you can make use of engine management systems. OBD-2 ECUs are meant for better emissions control so they are really hard to modify, which means engine management systems won't work on them. Also the extra sensors make it harder for your car to accept mods. I have a 97 Civic and it is OBD-2. I have sensors everywhere. For example, I have one in my cat making it hard for me to run a test pipe because the sensor there will think the cat is failing and throw a CEL (Check Engine Light) if the cat is replaced with a test pipe. There are pipes though with an 02 bung and pieces of the cat material over the bung to simulate a cat. HTH

Performance wise it gives no advantage to swap to OBD-II. The only value of it is its better for emissions and easier to professionally diagnose.

Instead of trying to check everthing in the trouble area. Once again, I want that freaking 1994 mass sensor in my car.
