Re: how do you replace cv join boots?
If you dont have some serious tools, have it done. the hardest parts are removing the axles and the axle nut. I have air tools. And after changing several, the air tools dont always work.
Re: how do you replace cv join boots?
Right on.
The job is fairly straightforward until you have a problem, and theres always a stubborn part(i.e. axle stuck or rusted in the hub, ball joint wont seperate well, circlip on the end in the tranny gets stuck, and the list goes on)
If you dont have the tools and the know how, this can turn into a nightmare fast,
(and a tow bill
)
Re: how do you replace cv join boots?
any idea on how much it would probably cost to get it done by a mechanic?

Mine have already been replaced once and are looking and sounding like it's almost time again. I have a 94MX-3 with the 1.6 and a manual trans was wondering if any other axles might fit?

Re: how do you replace cv join boots?
diggin around in the old posts, huh?
Over 3 bills us is waaaaaayy too much,I bet even your local Mazda dealer wouldn't charge that!
Consider this:
1 axle from reputable parts store 60-90 bucks
Shop mark-up on part boosts it to about 100-150 for the axle.
Any good auto tech can change one in under a half hour, hour at most if probs arise.
So unless this shop gets 165 buck an hour for labor you are getting screwed.
I think I'd call around to a diff. shop.
Just my $0.02

Re: how do you replace cv join boots?
yea i just found out, the guy told me the wrong thing. he correcty cited the part when speaking with my father though.
it is the cv shaft according to what the guy told my father. i WAS thinking that it was only about 300 for both joints last time they were replaced, so i'm glad i got everything cleared up.

Re: how do you replace cv join boots?
oh yea, this is at the dealership.
he said labor would be 60-75 an hour(can't remember, i was tired and didn't write it all down) and that it would only take an hour...

Re: how do you replace cv join boots?
do you have a pair from driveshaftshop? Do they have to build the custom? How pricey are they?
